AC Installation & Replacement in Firestone

Firestone's population grew more than eightfold between 2000 and 2020, so almost every home in town came from a production builder in the last 25 years. Some were built with central air and are now on aging builder-grade units; others were sold without it. We handle both, with a Manual J, the town permit and a written price.

Two kinds of permit: replacement or new AC

The Town of Firestone Building Division, at 9950 Park Avenue, prices a residential AC and/or furnace replacement as its own permit category. Installing air conditioning where there was none adds an electrical fee, since a new circuit and disconnect are being run. Knowing which applies keeps the estimate accurate, and we file it either way.

Firestone Climate Note

At about 4,856 feet on the plains of southwestern Weld County, Firestone has cold, windy winter spells and hot summer afternoons that test aging AC systems.

Adding AC to a builder home that never had it

If your house was built without central air, the furnace and ducts were sized for heating alone, though production homes often have room for a coil on the furnace. We check the blower's capacity, the return path and the static pressure before choosing equipment. Upstairs rooms in two-story homes are the usual problem spots, and a dedicated upstairs return can make more difference than extra tonnage.

We also look at the electrical panel. Many newer homes have 200-amp service with room for a condenser circuit, but finished basements, EV chargers and hot tubs fill panels quickly.

Replacing aging units in Saddleback, St. Vrain Ranch and Oak Meadows

Homes from the town's early-2000s wave are on systems around 20 years old. Replacing them now means R-454B or R-32 equipment and a new matched coil. If the furnace is the same age, it is worth pricing both together, since the coil sits on it. Most of these subdivisions have HOAs, so check before a condenser moves or grows, and plan placement with hail and wind exposure in mind on open lots.

Barefoot Lakes, launched in 2016, has much younger systems. Owners there more often call about a bonus room that runs hot, which a ductless head can solve.

Historic Firestone, the small original town, is the exception: older homes there may be adding central air for the first time or replacing a swamp cooler, and they get the full duct and panel assessment.

Sizing on the plains

At about 4,860 feet, Firestone is lower than most of the metro, so the altitude loss in coil capacity is modest. Summer load comes mainly from sun on unshaded west walls and windows in newer subdivisions with young trees. A room-by-room Manual J keeps the system right-sized; our sizing guide explains why we do not size by square footage.

United Power, Black Hills and heat pumps

United Power and Black Hills Energy are listed as the electric and gas utilities for Barefoot Lakes, and many Firestone addresses share them, but confirm by bill. If United Power is on your bill, Xcel's programs are off the table; call the co-op about anything it offers now.

We quote a heat pump beside every AC because it cools identically and can carry much of the winter heating with your gas furnace as backup. The 2026 Colorado credit is $1,000 per air-source heat pump, filed by a registered contractor with no less than $333 deducted from your invoice. For Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500, eligibility follows DRCOG's boundaries, and we confirm that Firestone parcels fall inside them before filing. Federal 25C ended after 2025.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Firestone

Does Firestone charge more to permit a new AC than a replacement?

A new installation adds an electrical fee to the permit, since a new circuit is being installed.

My Firestone home was built without AC. Can the furnace handle a coil?

Usually, but we check blower capacity, return size and static pressure first.

Which electric utility serves my house?

United Power is listed for Barefoot Lakes and serves much of the town; the bill is the definitive answer.

How long does a replacement take?

A same-location replacement is typically done in a day. First-time installs with duct or electrical changes take longer, and permit timing adds to the schedule.

Is a ductless unit good for a hot bonus room?

Often. It cools the room independently without rebalancing the whole duct system.
