Furnace Installation & Replacement in Firestone

Firestone grew from under 2,000 residents in 2000 to more than 16,000 in 2020, so nearly every house in town is a production home built in the last 25 years. That puts a large share of original furnaces in the replacement window right now. Here's how we handle a furnace installation in Firestone, from Saddleback and St. Vrain Ranch to Barefoot Lakes.

The first big replacement wave

Firestone's housing units rose from 3,499 in 2010 to 5,614 in 2020, but much of the earliest growth happened between 2000 and 2010 in subdivisions like Saddleback, St. Vrain Ranch, Oak Meadows and Mountain Shadows. Furnaces from that decade are now 15 to 25 years old, and builder-grade units tend to show it: cracked inducer housings, failing control boards and worn blower motors. Once repairs start stacking up on a furnace that age, replacement usually makes more sense.

Barefoot Lakes, which launched in 2016, has much younger equipment. Owners there are more often asking about adding zoning or a heat pump than replacing a furnace.

One more thing to check before buying: the AC coil sitting on top of the furnace. In most 2000s homes it was installed at the same time, and a new furnace often needs a transition or a matched coil to fit. If the coil is the same age as the furnace, replacing both now usually avoids paying twice for the same labor.

Firestone Climate Note

At about 4,856 feet on the plains of southwestern Weld County, Firestone has cold, windy winter spells and hot summer afternoons that test aging AC systems.

Sizing two-story production homes

Builders often install one furnace in the basement to heat three levels. The upstairs bedrooms get the least air and the most sun, so they're the usual complaint. A Manual J for each floor often shows the original furnace was sized correctly for the whole house but delivers too little to the top floor. A two-stage or variable-speed furnace, a bigger return upstairs and balanced dampers usually fix it. At 4,856 feet, a gas furnace delivers about 81% of its sea-level input after high-altitude conversion, and we set orifices and pressure accordingly.

Choosing a compliant furnace

Since January 1, 2026, Colorado has required new gas furnaces to meet 14 ng/J NOx or the newest ENERGY STAR version. If your home already has a condensing furnace on PVC, a 97% replacement usually uses the same vent path after we confirm pipe size and length. If it has an 80% furnace on a metal vent shared with the water heater, an ultra-low NOx 80% furnace can stay on that vent. Our NOx guide explains the details.

Town permit and fees

The Town of Firestone Building Division at 9950 Park Ave issues the permit. The town's fees list one permit that covers a furnace replacement, an AC replacement or the two together; a water heater is permitted separately, and a brand-new AC carries an added electrical fee. If you're replacing the furnace and AC together, that combined permit keeps the paperwork simple. We pull it and schedule the inspection.

Black Hills, United Power and heat pumps

For Barefoot Lakes, the builder lists Black Hills Energy for gas and United Power for electricity; other parts of town may differ, so check your bill. With United Power as your electric utility, Xcel's heat pump rebates don't apply, but Colorado's $1,000 air-source credit and Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 cold-climate rebate do. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025.

If your AC is as old as your furnace, a heat pump or dual-fuel system can replace both. Our heat pump vs. furnace guide compares the options.

Furnace Installation FAQs — Firestone

My Saddleback furnace is about 20 years old and needs repairs. Replace it?

If repairs are piling up on a builder-grade unit that age, replacement usually makes sense. We give you both prices.

Can I permit a furnace and AC replacement together in Firestone?

Yes. The town fee schedule has one residential permit for AC and/or furnace replacement.

Why is my upstairs too hot in winter and summer?

Usually airflow, not capacity. Return upgrades, balancing and a two-stage furnace help.

Who supplies gas in Firestone?

Black Hills Energy in Barefoot Lakes and likely other areas. Check your bill to confirm.
