Heat Pump Installation in Fort Lupton

Fort Lupton is one of the few towns we serve that isn't a DRCOG member, so the regional Power Ahead Colorado rebate doesn't apply here. Electricity comes from United Power, not Xcel. Both facts change the math on a heat pump, and we'd rather you know that before you get a quote.

What incentives are left

DRCOG's member list includes several nearby Weld towns, such as Dacono, Frederick, Firestone and Mead, but not Fort Lupton or Weld County itself. Power Ahead requires a project in a participating jurisdiction, so its $1,500 is off the table for Fort Lupton addresses.

The Colorado heat pump tax credit still applies anywhere in the state: $1,000 for an air-source system in 2026, claimed by a registered contractor, with at least $333 passed to you as an invoice discount. The federal 25C credit isn't available for 2026 installs.

A utility directory lists United Power for electricity and Atmos Energy or Xcel Energy for gas. United Power has its own member rebate program and paid heat pump rebates in 2025, but we couldn't confirm its 2026 amounts, so call the co-op. Installers report Xcel's heat pump rebate can go to Xcel gas customers, including gas-only customers, which could matter if Xcel supplies your gas. Confirm that with Xcel before counting on it.

Running costs on United Power

Because your electric rate comes from United Power, statewide Xcel examples don't fit your bill. A heat pump's operating cost compared with gas depends on your per-kWh rate and the efficiency of the furnace it's working alongside. At current Colorado prices, a 95% gas furnace usually costs less per unit of heat. A heat pump earns its place by replacing an AC you'd buy anyway and by covering mild-weather heating efficiently. Ask United Power whether it offers time-of-day pricing, since cheaper off-peak power narrows the gap. Our dual-fuel guide walks through the break-even calculation with your own rates.

Sizing for Weld County's colder design day

The ENERGY STAR reference puts Weld County's 99% heating design temperature at 0°F, colder than the 3–5°F used for most of the Denver metro. Fort Lupton is low for the region, at about 4,915 feet, but open farmland means wind and blowing snow. We run a Manual J at 0°F, choose a cold-climate unit by its published low-temperature output, and correct for altitude; NREL measured about 5–7% less capacity in Golden than at sea level. See our sizing guide.

Older town homes and newer additions

Fort Lupton's housing went from about 2,100 units in 2000 to over 2,700 in 2020, on top of older homes in the original town around Denver Avenue. Older houses often have smaller ducts and electrical service, which makes a dual-fuel setup or a ductless system the simpler route. Newer homes usually have ducts and service sized for central air, so a ducted heat pump can replace the AC directly.

Permits

The City of Fort Lupton Building Department issues permits, with SAFEbuilt handling plan review and inspections. Contractors apply through the CommunityCore portal. We file the permit, include the load calculation and equipment specs, and schedule the inspection.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Fort Lupton

Can I get the Power Ahead rebate in Fort Lupton?

No. Fort Lupton isn't a DRCOG member, and the rebate is limited to participating jurisdictions.

What incentives can I use?

The Colorado heat pump tax credit ($1,000, at least $333 to you), any United Power program in effect, and possibly Xcel's rebate if Xcel supplies your gas. Confirm the utility programs directly.

Is a heat pump worth it here without Power Ahead?

It can be when you're replacing an AC anyway. The added cost of a heat pump over an AC is the real comparison, and the state credit offsets part of it.

Should I go all-electric or keep gas?

With no Power Ahead rebate and United Power rates, most homeowners here keep a gas furnace for deep cold and let the heat pump handle cooling and mild days. All-electric works best in tight homes with enough panel capacity.

Who handles permits?

The city's Building Department, with SAFEbuilt doing plan review and inspections. We apply through CommunityCore.
