Heat Pump Installation in Broomfield
More than half of Broomfield's homes were built in 2000 or later, which makes it one of the easiest places in the metro to install a ducted heat pump. The colder design temperature it shares with Boulder County, and its location in the downslope wind corridor near Rocky Flats, still shape how the system should be sized and placed.
Newer homes, newer ducts
About 55% of Broomfield homes date from 2000 or later, mostly in Anthem Highlands, Anthem Ranch, McKay Landing and similar subdivisions. Their duct systems were designed for a modern furnace and central air, and many first-generation systems are now hitting replacement age. A ducted cold-climate heat pump can often reuse the existing ducts after a static-pressure test and a check of return sizing.
Two-story plans are common, and upstairs rooms often run warm in summer. A variable-speed heat pump paired with a variable-speed air handler runs long, low cycles that even out those temperature differences better than a single-stage system. Zoning helps in the bigger houses.

Broomfield Climate Note
Broomfield sits at 5,348 ft on open prairie with significant wind exposure. Sealed-combustion equipment and properly weighted vents are critical for reliable winter operation.

Older Broomfield Heights and Crofton Park homes
The first filing of Broomfield Heights dates to the 1950s, and much of the city was built between 1970 and 1999. In those homes, the usual retrofit is dual fuel. The heat pump replaces the old AC, and the furnace stays as backup. If the panel is a 100-amp service without much room, dual fuel avoids the large backup-strip circuit an all-electric setup needs.
Sizing for a 0°F design day
Broomfield shares Boulder County's 0°F heating design temperature in ENERGY STAR's reference guide, while the average January low is about 18°F. A heat pump meant to carry the house alone needs strong rated output at 5°F, and we compare that to the Manual J load at 0°F to find the balance point. At about 5,350 feet, we also account for altitude, which reduced capacity by about 5–7% in NREL's tests in Golden.
Wind matters too. Downslope events near Rocky Flats can push snow and debris against outdoor units. We use secured stands, keep units clear of drifts and roof runoff, and set them high enough to drain defrost water.
Rebates for Broomfield homeowners
Xcel Energy supplies gas and most of the city's electricity. Broomfield's own rebate page gave an example of $5,625 in Xcel rebates for a 2.5-ton cold-climate system under the pre-October 2026 rates. Installers report Xcel cut those amounts about a third on October 1, 2026, so confirm current numbers with Xcel. The city also notes that heat pumps replacing existing electric heat don't qualify for the bonus. United Power members in the area have their own co-op program.
The City and County of Broomfield is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 applies with contractor pre-approval. The state credit adds at least $333 on your invoice. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025. Our rebate guide shows how they stack.
One honest caveat: at current prices, gas from a 95% furnace is usually cheaper per unit of heat. A heat pump makes the most financial sense when your AC needs replacing anyway.
What we check before quoting
Every Broomfield estimate starts with a Manual J load calculation and a look at the ducts, filter rack, return grilles and panel. We note whether your HOA has rules on outdoor equipment placement or screening, and whether a condensate line or line-set route needs to change. The written estimate lists the equipment's 5°F capacity, the backup-heat plan and any electrical work. If ducts are leaking into an attic or crawlspace, sealing them first can let you buy a smaller heat pump.
Permit
The City and County of Broomfield Building Division issues the mechanical permit. We submit the load calculation and equipment data, coordinate any electrical permit, and schedule the inspection.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Broomfield
Can my Anthem home go all-electric?
Often. Newer, tighter homes with good ducts are strong candidates for a cold-climate heat pump sized to the 0°F design temperature, with electric backup strips if the panel allows.
Why is Broomfield sized colder than Denver?
ENERGY STAR's design-temperature data groups Broomfield with Boulder County at 0°F, versus 3°F for Denver. That affects how much capacity we specify.
I have electric baseboard heat. Do I get the Xcel bonus?
According to the City of Broomfield, heat pumps replacing existing electric heat aren't eligible for the bonus rebate. The standard rebate, Power Ahead and the state credit may still apply.
Who handles the permit?
We do. We file with the Broomfield Building Division and schedule the inspection.
