Furnace Installation & Replacement in Fort Lupton

Fort Lupton is an old farm town that has grown steadily rather than all at once, so its houses span more than a century. About three-quarters of today's homes already existed in 2000, which means a lot of furnaces in town are on at least their second round. Here's how we approach a furnace installation in Fort Lupton.

A mix of eras

Fort Lupton's population roughly tripled between 1970 and 2000, and housing has kept growing since, from 2,132 units in 2000 to 2,732 in 2020. Near downtown and Denver Avenue, older houses often have small basements or a furnace in a closet, sometimes venting through an old chimney. The 1970s and 1980s homes from the town's growth spurt usually have a basement furnace on a metal vent with the water heater. Homes from the 2000s on are reaching the age where original furnaces start to fail.

Each of those needs a different scope. An older home may need a chimney liner or a new vent path; a 1970s house may need return air improvements; a 2000s home is usually a straightforward swap, with the bigger question being whether to replace the AC too.

Fort Lupton Climate Note

Fort Lupton sits at about 4,915 feet in the South Platte valley, with open farmland around town, cold winter snaps and hot, dry summer afternoons.

Neighborhoods We Serve

Downtown Fort Lupton (Denver Avenue), 1970s subdivisions, newer development on the edges of town

Sizing below 5,000 feet

At 4,915 feet, Fort Lupton is one of the lower towns we serve, but furnaces still lose about 20% of their sea-level input after high-altitude conversion. We set orifices and pressure from the manufacturer's tables and size the unit with a Manual J. Open farmland around town means more wind exposure than in a tightly packed suburb, which raises the design load for houses on the edge of town and on acreage.

80% or condensing after January 2026

Colorado now requires new gas furnaces to meet 14 ng/J NOx or the latest ENERGY STAR version, effective January 1, 2026. If your furnace shares a flue with the water heater, an ultra-low NOx 80% furnace keeps that arrangement. A 97% condensing furnace vents through PVC and needs a drain; the water heater left behind may need its vent resized. We put both on paper so you can compare up-front cost and gas savings. In a smaller older house, the condensing furnace's savings are modest, while in a larger 1970s home with long winters of use, they add up faster. Either way, the furnace is converted for altitude and checked for proper gas pressure and temperature rise before we leave. Our NOx guide explains the rule.

City permit with SAFEbuilt review

The City of Fort Lupton Building Department, at 2500 9th Street, handles permits, with plan review and inspections performed by SAFEbuilt. Contractors apply through the CommunityCore portal. We submit the application, schedule the inspection and make sure the furnace, gas connection and venting are ready for it.

Gas supplier, United Power and heat pumps

A utility directory lists United Power as Fort Lupton's electric provider and both Atmos Energy and Xcel Energy for natural gas. Check your bill to see which gas company serves your address. Because United Power, not Xcel, supplies most homes' electricity, Xcel's heat pump rebates generally don't apply, but Colorado's $1,000 air-source credit and Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 cold-climate rebate can.

If your AC is as old as the furnace, compare a heat pump or dual-fuel system before committing. Our heat pump vs. furnace guide lays out the trade-offs.

Furnace Installation FAQs — Fort Lupton

Who inspects furnace installations in Fort Lupton?

SAFEbuilt performs plan review and inspections for the city. We apply through CommunityCore and schedule it.

Which gas company serves my Fort Lupton home?

It could be Atmos Energy or Xcel Energy. Check your bill.

My house is near downtown and has an old chimney. Can I keep using it?

For an 80% furnace, possibly, if it is lined and sized correctly. A condensing furnace uses PVC instead.

Do Xcel heat pump rebates apply here?

Only if Xcel is your electric utility. Most homes are on United Power, but state credits and Power Ahead Colorado still apply.
