Heat Pump Installation in Berkley

Berkley sits outside any city, but it is inside the DRCOG region through Adams County, and that matters for heat pump incentives. Its housing ranges from early bungalows with patched-in ducts to 2022 homes in Berkley Shores. Which kind of heat pump fits depends heavily on which of those you live in.

Incentives for an unincorporated address

Adams County is a member of the Denver Regional Council of Governments, so unincorporated Berkley qualifies for Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate on cold-climate air-source heat pumps in existing homes. The contractor has to submit for pre-approval before work starts, so the paperwork comes first.

The state's 2026 heat pump credit is $1,000 per air-source system, claimed by a registered contractor who passes at least $333 to you as an invoice discount. The federal 25C credit is gone for equipment installed after 2025.

A utility directory lists Xcel Energy as Berkley's electric provider. Xcel's heat pump rebates changed on October 1, 2026, and installers have reported lower amounts since then, so confirm the current figures with Xcel before you sign anything. Our rebates guide tracks the programs.

Berkley Climate Note

Berkley sits at about 5,210 feet just north of Denver. Lakes and Clear Creek Valley Park nearby mean outdoor AC coils in some yards collect leaves and cottonwood fluff through the summer.

Ductless for bungalows and small ranches

Older Berkley bungalows often have narrow, retrofitted ducts that struggle to carry heat pump airflow, and some rooms barely get any. Ductless mini-splits avoid the problem: a wall or ceiling head in the main rooms, with line sets run outside to a compact outdoor unit. Many owners keep the existing furnace for the coldest nights. Our ductless guide for older homes explains the layouts.

Ducted systems in ranches and newer homes

In brick ranches and split-levels with decent ductwork, a ducted cold-climate heat pump can replace the air conditioner and pair with the furnace as a dual-fuel system. Homes in Berkley Shores, built around 2022, are already set up for central air and modern loads, so a heat pump there mostly comes up when the original AC fails or the owner wants to burn less gas.

Sizing and the electrical panel

The ENERGY STAR design temperature for Adams County is 5°F. We run a Manual J at that temperature and pick equipment by its published low-temperature output, not the 47°F rating on the brochure, with a correction for elevation; NREL testing found about 5 to 7 percent less capacity at Golden's altitude than at sea level. Below the point where the heat pump can no longer keep up, the furnace or electric strips take over.

Then there is the panel to think about. A heat pump needs a 240-volt circuit, and backup strips can add a large load. Mid-century homes on 100-amp service often stay with gas backup rather than an all-electric design for that reason.

Permits and the jurisdiction

Adams County permits heating and cooling equipment in unincorporated Berkley, and contractors must be registered with the county. If your address turns out to be inside Denver or Arvada, the city permits it instead, and both are DRCOG members too. We sort that out before quoting.

On running costs, a high-efficiency gas furnace still tends to deliver heat for less per unit than a heat pump on the coldest days at current Colorado prices, while the heat pump wins in mild weather, which is most of a Front Range winter. A dual-fuel thermostat lets you pick the outdoor temperature where the system switches over, and we set it from your actual gas and electric rates rather than a default. If cutting gas use matters more to you than the last dollar, we can set it lower and show what that does to the bill.
