AC Installation & Replacement in Fort Lupton
Fort Lupton is a Weld County farm town that grew from about 2,500 residents in 1970 to nearly 7,000 by 2000, so much of its housing comes from those decades, around an older core near Denver Avenue. Summers on the plains are hot, and many of these homes are either adding central air or replacing a tired first system. We size each one from a load calculation and quote in writing.
Older homes near downtown
Houses near Denver Avenue and the original town grid often predate central air. Some heat with a basement furnace, others with floor furnaces or wall heaters added over the years. If there is a forced-air furnace, central air can usually be added with a coil on top of it, a condenser outside and a line set between them, after we check the blower and return. If there is no duct system, ductless mini-splits are usually more practical than building one.
Older wiring is the other check. Before we quote, we compare the new condenser's required circuit with your panel's size and spare capacity, and we flag any needed upgrade in writing.

Fort Lupton Climate Note
Fort Lupton sits at about 4,915 feet in the South Platte valley, with open farmland around town, cold winter snaps and hot, dry summer afternoons.
Neighborhoods We Serve
Downtown Fort Lupton (Denver Avenue), 1970s subdivisions, newer development on the edges of town
Replacing first-generation systems in 1970s-1990s homes
Homes from the town's growth years are often on an original or second air conditioner. Replacing one now means a new refrigerant generation: condensers built since 2025 use R-454B or R-32, and a matched coil goes in with them. Colorado's minimum efficiency is 13.4 SEER2 for a new split AC, and we quote that tier plus at least one higher option so you can compare operating costs.
Sizing at 4,900 feet
Fort Lupton is one of the lower spots in the metro area, so altitude reduces coil capacity less than in the foothills. It still matters a little, and so do the things that drive summer load here: long west walls, little tree cover in newer subdivisions and attic insulation that has settled over decades. A Manual J captures all of that and keeps us from overselling tonnage. Our sizing guide explains the process.
Farm properties add their own variables: shop buildings, long gravel drives where dust settles on coils, and windbreak trees that can either shade a condenser nicely or bury it in leaves. We site the unit with those in mind.
Permits through the city and SAFEbuilt
Inside city limits, AC permits are issued by the city building department on 9th Street, but the plan review and the inspector both come from SAFEbuilt, the city's contracted building services firm. Applications are contractor-submitted on the CommunityCore portal. A closed, inspected permit is worth having when you sell, and our office takes care of getting it.
On farm properties outside city limits, Weld County is the authority instead, and we confirm that before filing.
Your utility and the heat pump comparison
A utility directory lists United Power as the electric provider and Atmos Energy or Xcel Energy for gas; your bills confirm which applies. Because United Power customers are outside Xcel's electric rebate programs, ask United Power about current offers before you buy.
We price a heat pump next to the AC because it also heats, and in 2026 it can earn a $1,000 Colorado credit per air-source unit, with the registered contractor passing at least $333 to you. Whether Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 applies depends on where your parcel sits: the program serves DRCOG's member area, and only part of Weld County belongs to it, so we check eligibility before scheduling. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Fort Lupton
Can I add central air to an older Fort Lupton home with floor furnaces?
Not through ducts that don't exist. Ductless mini-splits are the usual answer, and they also heat.
Who inspects AC installations in Fort Lupton?
The city building department, with SAFEbuilt handling plan review and inspections. Properties outside city limits go to Weld County.
Who is my electric utility?
A utility directory lists United Power for Fort Lupton. Check your bill, since rebates follow the utility.
Is altitude a big factor at 4,900 feet?
Less than in the foothills, but a Manual J still accounts for it along with sun exposure and insulation.
Does the furnace have to be replaced with the AC?
Not necessarily, but when it is nearing 20 years old, doing both often makes sense, since the new coil sits on it. New gas furnaces sold in Colorado since 2026 must meet the state's low-NOx limit, which we account for in the quote.
