Heat Pump Installation in Sherrelwood

Many Sherrelwood homeowners are deciding what to do about an aging swamp cooler or an old AC on a 1960s ranch. A heat pump answers both at once: it brings real air conditioning and carries much of the winter heating, while the gas furnace stays for the coldest nights. Adams County's DRCOG membership also puts the area inside the Power Ahead rebate program.

Swamp cooler to heat pump

A 1959 house in Sherrelwood Estates was listed with gas forced air and evaporative cooling, a combination that is still common here. Replacing the cooler with a ducted heat pump uses the existing furnace ducts for both seasons. The cooler comes off the roof, the opening is patched and the ceiling grille sealed, which also stops a winter heat leak.

Where the ducts are too small for good heat pump airflow, ductless mini-splits are an option: a head or two in the main living areas and bedrooms, with the furnace as backup. Our ductless guide covers layouts for older homes.

Sherrelwood Climate Note

Sherrelwood sits at about 5,292 feet north of Denver. The dry Front Range air is why evaporative coolers are still common alongside central air here.

Dual fuel with the existing furnace

Most heat pump installs in Sherrelwood keep a gas furnace. The heat pump runs in mild and moderate weather, and the furnace takes over below a set outdoor temperature. If the furnace is reasonably new, the heat pump's indoor coil goes on top of it with a compatible thermostat. If it is old, a new furnace and heat pump together are easier to match. Our dual-fuel guide explains switchover settings.

Incentives in unincorporated Adams County

Adams County appears on DRCOG's member list, so existing homes in unincorporated Sherrelwood qualify for Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate on cold-climate air-source heat pumps. A participating contractor has to submit before installation.

The state adds a $1,000 credit for 2026 that the registered installer claims, with no less than $333 of it showing up as a discount on your bill. Federal 25C no longer applies to anything installed after 2025. If Xcel Energy is your electric utility, its heat pump rebates apply as well; installers report the amounts changed October 1, 2026, so confirm current figures with Xcel. Check your bill to see which utility serves you.

Sizing and electrical

For Adams County, ENERGY STAR sets the heating design point at 5°F. Our Manual J uses it, and we choose equipment by its published low-temperature output, corrected for altitude; NREL testing measured about 5 to 7 percent less capacity at Golden's elevation than at sea level. Single-story ranches with new windows and attic insulation often have modest heating loads, which suits a heat pump well.

A heat pump needs a 240-volt circuit, and backup strips need much more. On a 100-amp panel, gas backup is usually the practical choice.

Cold-climate models keep producing useful heat well below freezing, which our Denver winter guide covers with test data. The outdoor unit goes on a stand above snow level, and we route the defrost drainage away from walks and the driveway so it doesn't freeze into a sheet of ice.

Permits and running costs

Adams County permits heat pump installations in unincorporated Sherrelwood, and we take care of filing and the inspection visit.

On operating cost, a high-efficiency gas furnace still tends to heat more cheaply on very cold nights at current prices. The heat pump's advantage comes in the many mild days of a Front Range winter and in summer, where it replaces a swamp cooler or AC. We set the switchover from your actual rates.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Sherrelwood

Can a heat pump replace my swamp cooler?

Yes. It gives you refrigerated cooling and efficient heat. We remove the cooler and seal the roof and ceiling openings.

Does Power Ahead apply in Sherrelwood?

Yes. Adams County is a DRCOG member, so existing homes qualify for $1,500 with contractor pre-approval.

Do I have to give up my gas furnace?

No. Most installs here keep it as backup for the coldest nights.

How cold can it get before the furnace takes over?

That's the switchover point. We set it from your gas and electric rates and the heat pump's capacity, and you can adjust it later.

Will my 100-amp panel work?

Usually, with gas backup. All-electric systems with backup strips may need more capacity.
