Carrier Repair in Denver

Carrier furnaces and air conditioners are installed in a huge share of Denver-area homes, and they tell you a lot through two-digit status codes. Below we explain those codes, Carrier's 90-day warranty registration rule, and what Carrier's own manuals say about high-altitude gas furnaces. MrFixer repairs Carrier equipment in or out of warranty, any time of day.

Common Carrier problems we see around Denver

Searches like 'Carrier AC not cooling' spike every June along the Front Range. The usual culprits are a failed run capacitor or contactor at the outdoor unit, a refrigerant leak at a coil or flare fitting, a frozen indoor coil from a dirty filter, or an outdoor coil packed with cottonwood seed. Hail can also flatten condenser fins badly enough to choke airflow.

In winter, Carrier furnace calls usually involve ignition lockouts, limit trips from restricted airflow, and pressure switch faults on high-efficiency models whose exhaust or intake pipes get blocked by snow or whose condensate trap freezes. Because Carrier boards store the last fault, reading the status code is the fastest way to narrow down the cause. Our AC repair and furnace repair visits start there.

Before you call, a few checks can save a visit. Make sure the thermostat is set to the right mode and has fresh batteries if it uses them. Replace a dirty filter; Denver's dry, dusty air loads filters faster than many owners expect. Confirm the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch near the unit) and the outdoor disconnect are on, and that the breaker has not tripped. If your Carrier air conditioner's indoor lines or coil are covered in ice, turn the cooling off and run the fan only until it thaws, then call. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.

Carrier furnace status codes

Most Carrier gas furnaces have an LED on the control board that flashes a two-digit status code: a number of long flashes followed by short flashes, so code 34 is three flashes, a pause, then four. The examples below come from Carrier's 58MXA furnace instructions and are representative of many Carrier boards, but codes vary between models, so compare against the chart on your furnace door.

Two codes deserve special attention. Code 33 means a limit or flame rollout switch is open; a tripped rollout switch needs a manual reset and indicates flames escaping the burner area, which can mean a blocked heat exchanger or vent. Code 22 means flame was detected when the gas valve was off, which points to a leaking gas valve. Do not keep resetting a furnace showing either code; shut it off and call.

Carrier warranty registration: register within 90 days

Carrier gives homeowners 90 days after installation to register. Registered equipment gets a choice of a 10-year parts limited warranty or a 5-year parts plus 3-year labor limited warranty, and you can change your choice within those first 90 days. Unregistered equipment falls back to a standard 5-year parts warranty with no labor coverage. Value-tier ductless systems are limited to 5 years of parts, and new residential construction installs are not eligible for the registered options.

Before a Carrier repair, look up your serial number on Carrier's warranty page to see what you have. Knowing whether labor is covered changes who should do the repair and who gets billed. We document failed parts with model and serial numbers so a warranty claim goes smoothly.

Carrier furnaces at Colorado altitude

Carrier's 58MXA installation instructions state that, in the U.S., the furnace is approved for a 2% derate for each 1,000 feet above sea level, with no derate needed up to 2,000 feet. Using Carrier's altitude table, a 100,000 Btuh furnace in the 5,000-foot range delivers noticeably less input than its nameplate, and the gas orifices and manifold pressure must be set from Carrier's tables for your altitude and gas heating value.

In practice, this means a Carrier furnace that was swapped in without high-altitude setup can overfire, run hot, trip limits and stress the heat exchanger. If your Carrier furnace trips code 33 often, ask us to check the orifices and manifold pressure as well as the filter and ductwork.

Repair or replace, and the Carrier family of brands

Carrier's new residential ducted and ductless products use Puron Advance, Carrier's name for R-454B, which replaces Puron (R-410A). Existing Puron systems are still repairable, but the cost of a large R-410A recharge on an older system is a fair reason to get a replacement quote alongside the repair quote. We provide both in writing.

Bryant is also a Carrier company, so Bryant and Carrier equipment often share components and diagnostic logic, and our experience with one carries to the other. If you are considering switching from gas to electric heat, read our heat pump vs furnace guide or ask about heat pump installation.

Carrier Error Codes

CodeWhat it usually means
13Limit circuit lockout: a limit or rollout switch stayed open more than 3 minutes (auto-resets after 3 hours)
14Ignition lockout after repeated failed ignition attempts (auto-resets after 3 hours)
22Flame sensed while the gas valve is off; possible leaking gas valve
23Pressure switch did not open; check for obstructed pressure tubing
24Secondary 24VAC fuse open; check for a short in low-voltage wiring
31Pressure switch did not close or reopened; venting, combustion air, inducer or gas pressure issue
33Limit or flame rollout switch open (rollout switch needs manual reset)
34Ignition proving failure; check flame sensor, igniter, gas valve and inlet gas pressure

Codes differ by model and control board. Check the chart on your unit's door panel before acting on any code.

Carrier FAQs

How long do I have to register a Carrier system?

Carrier's warranty page says 90 days after installation. Registering lets you choose 10 years of parts or 5 years of parts plus 3 years of labor; unregistered equipment gets 5 years of parts only.

My Carrier AC is running but not cooling. What should I check?

Replace the filter, make sure the outdoor unit's fan is spinning and the coil is not packed with debris, and check that the breaker is on. If it still blows warm, turn it off to protect the compressor and book AC repair.

What does Carrier furnace code 31 mean?

The pressure switch did not close or reopened. At altitude, common causes are a blocked or iced vent, inadequate combustion air, disconnected tubing or low gas pressure.

Does a Carrier furnace need to be derated in Denver?

Carrier's 58MXA instructions call for a 2% derate per 1,000 feet above sea level in the U.S., with orifices and manifold pressure set from Carrier's altitude tables.

Can MrFixer work on Carrier equipment under warranty?

Yes. We repair Carrier systems in or out of warranty, document the failed part, and give upfront written pricing. Call (720) 466-7983, 24/7.
