AC Installation & Replacement in Greenwood Village
Greenwood Village homes tend to be large, often with two or three cooling systems, zoning, and condensers set well away from the house on half-acre to one-acre lots. That changes how an installation is planned. We size each system with a Manual J, design for long refrigerant runs and quiet operation, and coordinate the permit with the Village's Community Development department.
Multiple systems and zoned homes
In custom homes in Sundance Hills, Old Greenwood, and The Preserve, it is common to find a separate system for each floor or wing. Replacing them one at a time is fine, but each should be sized for its own load rather than the nameplate it replaces. A Manual J by zone often shows one system is oversized while another is short, especially where an addition or finished basement changed the house.
Zoned single systems need care too. With dampers closing off part of the house, a fixed-speed condenser can freeze its coil when only a small zone calls. Variable-speed or two-stage equipment matched to the zoning panel solves that, and we confirm the dampers and controls work with the new system.

Greenwood Village Climate Note
Greenwood Village at 5,633 ft has typical south-metro climate. Larger homes often benefit from zoning to address sun-exposure imbalances and multi-floor temperature differences.

Long line sets and condenser placement on large lots
On a large lot, owners often want the condenser out of sight and earshot, behind landscaping or near a garage far from the air handler. Manufacturers set limits on line-set length and height difference, and longer runs need refrigerant charge adjusted and sometimes larger lines. We check those limits before agreeing to a location.
Landscaping is the other factor. Shrubs planted to hide a condenser often choke it, and sprinklers corrode coils. We leave the clearances the manufacturer requires and keep the unit out of irrigation spray and roof drip lines. A hail guard is worth considering in exposed spots.
Greenwood Hills ranches
Greenwood Hills has 1960s ranch homes on lots near one acre, some of the oldest housing in Greenwood Village. Their ducts and electrical service were designed for a smaller load than many owners now expect after remodels. Before adding or upsizing cooling, we check panel capacity and return air, and we look at whether a ductless unit would serve a new addition better than extending old ducts.
Many of these ranches have been remodeled with vaulted ceilings, larger windows, and open kitchens that add cooling load the original system never saw. A room-by-room Manual J captures that, so the new equipment and duct changes match the house as it is today rather than as it was built.
Refrigerant, efficiency, and the heat pump option
New split systems use R-454B or R-32 with a matched indoor coil. Colorado is in DOE's North region, where the minimum is 13.4 SEER2 for a split AC and 14.3 SEER2 for a split heat pump; many owners here choose higher tiers for quieter, variable-speed operation. At 5,630 feet, cooling capacity is somewhat lower than sea-level ratings, so we size with a Manual J.
Xcel Energy supplies both gas and electricity in Greenwood Village and has offered rebates for qualifying heat pumps, not standard AC; amounts changed October 1, 2026, so confirm them. On the incentive side, the state's 2026 credit gives $1,000 per air-source heat pump through a registered contractor, who must pass at least $333 of it to you as a line-item discount; Power Ahead Colorado, run by DRCOG, adds $1,500 for cold-climate models, but only if the application goes in before the job begins. A heat pump paired with your furnace is covered in our dual-fuel guide.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Greenwood Village
Do I need a permit to replace an AC in Greenwood Village?
Whether a given replacement needs one should be confirmed with the Building Permitting and Inspection Division. We confirm before we schedule.
Can my condenser be placed far from the house?
Within the manufacturer's line-set limits, yes. Longer runs need charge adjustments and sometimes larger lines.
Should I replace all my systems at once?
Not necessarily. Replace by condition, but size each by its own zone load. If two systems are the same age and one has failed, pricing both together can save a second visit.
Why does my zoned system freeze up when only one room calls?
A fixed-speed system can push too much capacity into a small zone. Variable-speed equipment matched to the zone panel usually solves it.
Is a heat pump a good fit for a large home?
Often as part of a dual-fuel system, with the furnace covering the coldest days. We price both.
