Heat Pump Repair in Lafayette

Lafayette gets around 65 inches of snow in a typical year, more than many neighbors on the plains, and plenty of its heat pumps arrived recently through Boulder County's Switch Together group-buy. Those two facts shape most heat pump repairs here: snow management and warranty questions on young equipment.

Sixty-five inches of snow and a ground-level coil

A heat pump needs to breathe through its coil and drain its defrost water, and neither happens under a drift. Lafayette units mounted on a pad at grade often get buried after a big storm or when shoveled snow is piled beside the driveway. The result is a coil that frosts solid, an ice ring around the base and a fan blade that eventually hits it.

Keep at least a foot of clearance around the unit, brush snow off the top by hand, and never pile shoveled snow against it. If your unit sits on the ground, a stand that lifts it above typical drift depth is usually the most useful upgrade we can recommend.

Roof runoff is the other Lafayette hazard. Meltwater dripping from an eave onto the unit freezes overnight into a cap of ice on the top grille, and the fan cannot pull air through it. A gutter, a diverter or a small hood over the unit fixes the cause. Pouring hot water on the ice is a short-term fix that often refreezes deeper in the coil.

Lafayette Climate Note

Lafayette sits at about 5,266 ft with the foothills visible to the west. Cooler nights year-round; lots of homes use heat pumps and dual-fuel systems for efficiency.

Group-buy systems and warranty registration

Lafayette is a Switch Together partner city, and many homes in Indian Peaks, Waneka Lake and North Lafayette added heat pumps through it. When a young unit fails, the first step is confirming the manufacturer warranty was registered, because longer parts coverage often depends on registration soon after installation. Bring us the serial number and the original contract. If the installer's labor warranty still applies, call them first; we are glad to repair it either way.

We see the usual early failures: capacitors, contactors, a loose low-voltage wire that drops the aux stage, and slow refrigerant leaks at service ports.

Aux and emergency heat settings

Many group-buy installs kept the gas furnace as backup, and the thermostat decides when it takes over. If the balance point is set at 40°F, the furnace may be doing most of the winter's work. If emergency heat was left on after a service visit, the heat pump is not running at all. We review the settings with you and explain how a dual-fuel system is meant to split the load.

Old Town and the coal-camp houses

Small miners' homes in Old Town Lafayette often have ductless systems because there was nowhere to run ducts. Their weak points are condensate lines that freeze where they exit an exterior wall, wall brackets that loosen over time, and line-set insulation that UV and birds strip away. Bare refrigerant lines lose heat and can sweat inside walls. These are inexpensive fixes that protect the equipment.

Permits and replacing a failed unit

The City of Lafayette exempts repairs from permits and offers contractor quick permits for equipment replacements through GovBuilt. On a replacement, the money available is a $1,500 Power Ahead rebate, a $1,000 state credit and whatever Xcel now pays after its October 2026 changes, which you should check. The federal 25C credit has ended. If your unit is over 12 to 15 years old and the compressor is gone, replacement is usually the better choice.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Lafayette

Should I clear snow off my heat pump?

Yes, gently by hand or with a broom. Keep a foot of space around it and do not pile shoveled snow nearby.

My Switch Together heat pump failed. Who do I call?

Check the installer's labor warranty first, then the manufacturer's parts warranty. We can repair it and help sort coverage.

Ice keeps forming on top of my unit. Why?

Usually roof drip from above. A gutter, diverter or unit hood stops it better than repeated thawing.

Do heat pump repairs need a permit in Lafayette?

Repairs are exempt. Equipment replacements use the city's quick permit.

Why does my mini-split leak water outside in winter?

A condensate line freezing at the wall exit is common. We reroute or heat-trace it.
