Heat Pump Repair in Superior
Superior's building code designs for 154 mph wind, which tells you most of what you need to know about where outdoor heat pumps here live. Between the 1990s homes of Rock Creek Ranch and the rebuilt houses in Sagamore and Original Town, the town has both aging systems and brand-new ones, and each set has its own failure list.
Built for wind, but check the mounting
At about 5,500 feet on the open mesa, Superior gets strong downslope gusts most winters. An outdoor unit that is not anchored to its pad can walk, and a ductless condenser on a wall bracket can loosen until it vibrates against the siding. Over time that vibration cracks refrigerant lines at their bends and fittings, and a slow leak follows.
If your unit hums louder than it used to, rattles, or shows oil stains on the copper, call us. We tighten or replace mounts, add vibration isolators and leak-test the lines.

Superior Climate Note
Superior at about 5,522 ft sits between Boulder and the Denver suburbs. Heat pumps and dual-fuel systems work exceptionally well; advanced air filtration is essential post-Marshall Fire.

Rebuilt Sagamore and Original Town homes
After December 2021, owners rebuilding in Sagamore and Original Town often chose all-electric designs with cold-climate heat pumps. New systems tend to show commissioning issues in their first winters: auxiliary heat staging set too aggressively, thermostats that call emergency heat by default, and charge that was never verified in cold weather.
We test performance under heating load and correct the setup. We also remind owners to confirm the manufacturer warranty was registered; in a hectic rebuild, that step is easy to lose.
Rock Creek Ranch systems near end of life
Homes from Rock Creek Ranch's 1990s build-out that still run an original heat pump or AC are well past the typical service life of around 15 years. If an older Rock Creek Ranch unit uses R-22, any repair involving refrigerant gets expensive fast because that refrigerant is no longer produced. A failed capacitor on an R-22 unit is still worth fixing to get through a season; a compressor or coil failure is the signal to plan a replacement.
Many homeowners here keep their gas furnace and add a heat pump instead of the old AC. Our dual-fuel guide explains how that pairing works in Colorado.
Ice, snow and defrost
Wind-driven snow on the mesa packs into outdoor coils from the side. If the defrost cycle cannot clear it, the unit gradually turns into a block of ice and heating capacity collapses. A failed defrost thermistor, a weak outdoor fan motor or a reversing valve that does not shift are the usual causes. Siting matters too: a unit tucked in the lee of the house frosts less than one facing open ground.
Normal defrost is easy to recognize: the outdoor fan stops, the unit hisses or whooshes as the reversing valve shifts, steam rises off the coil, and a few minutes later heating resumes. If you see that, leave it alone. If the fan stops and nothing happens, or ice keeps thickening over several hours, turn the thermostat to emergency heat to keep the house warm and call us.
Permits and incentives in Superior
Repairs do not usually need a permit. Equipment replacements go through the Town of Superior Building Department, and we file and schedule the inspection. Occupied houses can draw Power Ahead's $1,500 and the $1,000 state credit, but a rebuild still under construction is excluded. Ask Xcel what it pays now; the program was reset this fall. Superior is a Boulder County Switch Together partner, and county EnergySmart help is now income-qualified only. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Superior
My outdoor unit vibrates against the house. Is that serious?
It can crack refrigerant lines over time. We re-mount the unit and add isolators.
Is my R-22 heat pump worth repairing?
Small electrical fixes, yes. Anything needing a refrigerant recharge or a new compressor usually is not.
Why does my new rebuild system use so much electricity?
Backup heat may be staged too early. We check the thermostat and charge under winter load.
Does wind affect heat pump performance?
Yes, wind pulls heat off the coil and speeds frosting. Placement in the lee of the house helps.
Who issues heat pump permits in Superior?
The Town of Superior Building Department. We handle the filing on replacements.
