Heat Pump Repair in Mead

In 1990 fewer than 500 people lived in Mead; the 2020 census counted close to 4,800, most of them in newer neighborhoods such as Liberty Ranch and The Highlands. That makes the town's heat pumps young, and repairs here are less about worn-out equipment than about how it was installed and set up.

The first few winters on a new system

A heat pump installed during construction is often charged and started in whatever weather the builder's schedule allowed. If that was a hot August day, the refrigerant charge may never have been verified under winter conditions. Low charge shows up as weak heat, frequent icing and lots of backup heat. We check charge using superheat and subcooling, find any leak and correct it.

Other first-winter faults include condensate lines that freeze where they exit the foundation, outdoor units set on gravel that settles and tilts, and air handlers whose blower speed was left at a factory setting that does not match the duct system.

Is the warranty registered?

For most Mead homeowners, this is the single most important question before any major repair. Many manufacturers require online registration within a set window, often 60 days, to give the longer parts warranty. If the builder's installer did not register the unit, you may have only the shorter base coverage. A serial-number lookup on the brand's site answers it in a minute, or we can do it. Labor coverage from the builder or installer is separate and usually expires sooner.

Thermostat and aux heat setup

Builder-grade thermostats are frequently set up as if the home had a standard AC and gas furnace. Set up that way, the compressor sits idle all winter, or the backup fires on every cycle. Either way you pay more than you should. A correct setup has the right system type, the reversing valve wire on the right terminal, and an auxiliary lockout that keeps backup off on mild days.

Our guide to heat pumps in Colorado winters explains how much backup heat is normal.

Open country, wind and snow

Mead sits on open farmland along I-25 with a 0°F design temperature. Wind drives snow against outdoor units and pulls heat off the coil, so defrost runs often. Frost that clears every 30 to 90 minutes is normal. Ice that builds into a solid block is not, and usually means a failed defrost sensor or control, low charge or meltwater that cannot drain. A stand that lifts the unit and lets water fall away is a good investment on exposed lots.

Mead's outdoor units also face dust from nearby fields and construction sites, which keeps building as new phases go up. A coil coated in dust frosts faster in winter and runs hotter in summer. A gentle rinse with a garden hose each spring and fall, power off, keeps it breathing. Leave fin straightening and deep cleaning to a technician.

Utilities, permits and replacement

Depending on where you live in Mead, electricity may come from United Power or Xcel, and gas from Xcel or Black Hills. That affects backup heat costs and which rebates apply. Replacements and new equipment go through the Town of Mead Building Division, and we handle the permit.

Because Mead is a DRCOG member, an existing home that replaces its heat pump can claim Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate along with Colorado's $1,000 credit; new construction is excluded. Xcel customers should confirm current rebates, which changed October 1, 2026. The federal 25C credit has ended.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Mead

My Liberty Ranch heat pump is five years old and not heating. Is it covered?

Possibly, if it was registered. We check by serial number before quoting a part.

Why does my new heat pump ice up so often?

Low startup charge or a defrost control fault is common on new installs. We check both.

My thermostat always shows AUX. Is that normal?

No. It often means the thermostat was set up wrong or the heat pump is not producing heat.

My outdoor unit is tilting. Does that matter?

Yes. A tilted unit can strain the compressor and drain poorly. We relevel or add a stand.

Who is my utility in Mead?

It depends on your address. Check your bills; both United Power and Xcel serve parts of town.
