Heat Pump Repair in Frederick

Housing in Frederick multiplied more than fivefold between the 2000 and 2020 censuses, so the town is mostly 21st-century construction. With Black Hills supplying gas and United Power the electricity, a heat pump fault can hide on either bill depending on how your backup is set up.

Dual fuel on Black Hills gas and United Power electric

Most heat pumps here work alongside a gas furnace. When the heat pump fails, the furnace usually takes over silently, and you may not notice until summer when there is no cooling, or until the Black Hills gas bill climbs. The reverse also happens: a misconfigured system runs the heat pump far below its comfortable range while the furnace sits idle.

The right switchover temperature depends on what you pay for each fuel. We look at your actual rates rather than a factory default. Our dual-fuel guide explains the math.

Frederick Climate Note

Frederick sits at about 4,938 ft on the open prairie, with strong winter winds and rapid temperature drops. Sealed-combustion furnaces and well-sealed ductwork are essential.

Capacitors, contactors and summer wear

Running all year means a heat pump's relays and capacitors cycle roughly twice as often as an AC's. The most common failure we fix in Frederick is a run capacitor that has weakened after a hot summer, leaving the outdoor fan or compressor humming without starting. Contactors pit and stick, and wire terminals loosen from vibration. These are quick, inexpensive repairs, and catching them early protects the compressor from repeated hard starts.

We also check the outdoor unit's disconnect and whip. In newer subdivisions, these were installed fast, and a loose lug or a whip rubbed through by vibration can cause intermittent shutdowns that look like a failing compressor. Finding that kind of fault takes a few minutes with a meter and saves a much bigger bill.

Wind, snow and the 1°F design day

The Town's building code uses a 1°F winter design temperature and 115 mph wind. On the open ground around Wyndham Hill and Rinn Valley Ranch, blowing snow packs coils quickly. Frost is normal and clears in defrost, but if ice keeps building or the unit stops running altogether, the defrost sensor, board or outdoor fan is usually the cause. A stand that lifts the unit above drift level and lets meltwater drain is one of the simplest ways to prevent repeat calls.

Systems coming out of warranty

Heat pumps installed when the newer subdivisions were built are now reaching the age where parts warranties run out, typically around ten years for registered equipment. If your system was installed by the builder, check whether it was ever registered with the manufacturer, since registration often determines whether you have the longer coverage. For units still covered, the part is free and you pay labor.

Frederick's newer homes are also built under the Colorado Model Electric Ready Code, which helps if you later go all-electric.

Repair or replace, and acreage properties

Homes on acreage near Nelson Lakes and other larger parcels sometimes have long refrigerant line runs or multiple systems. Long line sets are more prone to slow leaks at joints, and finding them takes patience. We leak-test rather than just topping off.

If replacement makes sense, a Town of Frederick Building Department permit is required, and we handle it. The Town's DRCOG membership lets an occupied home tap Power Ahead's $1,500, alongside the $1,000 state credit; brand-new houses are not eligible. Ask United Power about current rebates. The federal 25C credit has ended.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Frederick

How do I know if my heat pump has stopped working if the furnace covers for it?

Check the outdoor unit on a mild day in heating mode. If it is not running, or the gas bill jumps, call us.

What is the most common heat pump repair in Frederick?

Weak capacitors and worn contactors, especially after a hot summer.

Does Xcel offer heat pump rebates in Frederick?

Most Frederick homes are on United Power electric and Black Hills gas, so ask United Power about its programs.

Is my builder-installed heat pump still under warranty?

It depends on install date and registration. We check by serial number.

Can my heat pump work at 1°F?

Cold-climate models keep producing heat at that temperature, though with less capacity, which is why backup heat exists.
