Heat Pump Repair in Lyons

Lyons buys its electricity from its own Town utility at a flat rate of about 13.4 cents per kilowatt-hour, which makes the cost of a failing heat pump unusually easy to calculate. Add canyon wind, a river floodplain and propane on outlying parcels, and heat pump repair in Lyons has its own checklist.

What a broken heat pump costs on Town electric

At the Town's rate of $0.1339 per kWh and recent gas prices, our math puts the heat pump's break-even efficiency against a 95% furnace at a COP of about 3.5, and against an 80% furnace at about 3.0. A healthy cold-climate heat pump beats those numbers through much of the heating season. Electric backup strips have a COP of 1, so every hour they run in place of the compressor costs roughly three times as much heat-for-heat.

That makes the thermostat's AUX light worth watching. If it is on during mild weather, call us before the next bill.

Lyons Climate Note

At about 5,341 feet at the mouth of the foothills, Lyons gets cold canyon-edge winter nights and warm summer days, and many areas of town lie in the mapped floodplain.

Canyon wind and the outdoor unit

The town sits where the North and South St. Vrain canyons open onto the plains, and westerly winds funnel straight down them. Wind strips heat from the outdoor coil, speeds frosting and can push debris into the fan. On exposed lots, we recommend anchored stands and placing the unit where the house blocks the prevailing wind. After a big blow, look for a shifted unit, bent fan guard or new rattles.

Wind-borne grit from dirt roads and the quarries around town also scours fins and settles in the bottom of the coil. A yearly rinse keeps airflow up and frost down. If the fins are flattened across a large area, combing them straight restores some capacity, and badly damaged sections can sometimes be repaired rather than replacing the whole outdoor unit.

Floodplain placement after 2013

Much of the town was hit by the September 2013 flood, and outdoor HVAC equipment in the floodplain was among the first casualties. Many rebuilt homes now have units raised on platforms. If yours sits low in a mapped floodplain, moving or raising it is worth considering when it needs a major repair. Equipment set in a mapped floodplain can require its own Town floodplain permit, and we look that up first.

Propane backup and dual fuel

Some properties outside town use propane rather than natural gas. Propane is often expensive per unit of heat, which means the heat pump should carry as much of the load as possible and the propane furnace should only help on the coldest nights. If your switchover is set at a default temperature, you may be burning more propane than you need to. The dual-fuel article walks through the cost comparison.

Steamboat Valley and older homes

Homes in Steamboat Valley from the 1990s may still run original equipment that is past its service life. On those, a compressor failure points to replacement. In the historic sandstone buildings downtown, ductless systems are common, and the usual repairs are condensate drains, blower wheel cleaning and communication errors.

Permits and incentives

The Town of Lyons uses SAFEbuilt for building services, and contractors need a Town license to pull permits; 2024 ICC codes took effect July 1, 2026. Repairs generally do not need permits, but replacements do. Because the town participates in DRCOG, an occupied house can still claim $1,500 from Power Ahead plus the $1,000 state credit. Xcel electric rebates do not apply on Town electric; ask the Town about MEAN efficiency programs. The federal 25C credit has ended.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Lyons

How much does backup heat cost on Town electric?

Strips cost about three times as much per unit of heat as a healthy heat pump at the Town's flat rate.

Should I raise my outdoor unit if I am in the floodplain?

It is worth considering, especially during a replacement. A floodplain permit may be required.

Do Xcel rebates apply in Lyons?

Not for Town of Lyons electric customers. Ask the Town about MEAN programs.

My propane bill is high. Is my heat pump working?

Check whether it runs on mild days. A failed heat pump or a high switchover setting sends the load to propane.

Do you need a Lyons contractor license?

Yes, for permitted work. We pull permits with the Town on replacements.
