Heat Pump Installation in Longmont

Longmont is one of the few metro cities with its own electric utility. Longmont Power & Communications (LPC) supplies electricity, while Xcel Energy supplies gas. That split means the Xcel heat pump numbers in most online guides may not apply here, and the rebate path runs through Efficiency Works instead.

Rebates through LPC and Efficiency Works

LPC sends residential customers to Efficiency Works, the program shared by several Northern Colorado municipal utilities. Heat pump rebates require a participating service provider, and the application has to be filed within 45 days of project completion. Efficiency Works also offers a $2,000 bonus when a heat pump and insulation or air sealing are done within six months of each other. We couldn't confirm Efficiency Works' 2026 heat pump amounts from its site, so check them with Efficiency Works or the city's help line (303-776-6050).

Installer summaries say Xcel gas customers, including gas-only customers, qualify for Xcel's heat pump rebate with the gas-customer bonus. That could matter for homes on Xcel gas, but confirm with Xcel before relying on it. Longmont is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 applies with contractor pre-approval. The Colorado heat pump tax credit gives at least $333 off your invoice. Boulder County residents at or below 100% of area median income may qualify for EnergySmart help. The federal 25C credit has ended.

Designing for Longmont's cold

The city sits at about 4,980 feet, but it's on the colder side of the metro. The Boulder County design temperature is 0°F, and the city's record low is -38°F, set in 1930. A heat pump meant to carry the house alone needs strong rated output at 5°F, a balance point calculated from your actual load, and backup heat for the rare extremes. We size from a room-by-room Manual J and put the 5°F capacity in writing. See how heat pumps handle Front Range winters.

Historic West Side to Prospect

The West Side Historic District has homes from 1871 to 1930. Many were built before forced air and have retrofit ducts or rooms the system never reached. Ductless heads or slim-ducted units can add heating and cooling without opening plaster walls, and the existing heat can stay as backup.

Mid-century and later suburban neighborhoods usually have basement furnaces and conventional ducts, which makes them good fits for a heat pump in place of the AC with the furnace kept as dual-fuel backup. Prospect New Town, begun in the mid-1990s, has newer homes where an all-electric cold-climate system is often realistic.

Running costs with city electricity

Your electric rate comes from LPC, not Xcel, so the break-even point between gas and heat pump heat is different here. Across Colorado, gas from a 95% furnace is usually cheaper per unit of heat at current prices. Plug your LPC rate and Xcel gas rate into the method in our dual-fuel guide to set the switchover. Ask LPC about any time-of-day pricing too.

The Efficiency Works bundling bonus is worth planning around. Older homes in particular often benefit from attic insulation and air sealing, which reduce the heating load. That lets a smaller, cheaper heat pump carry more of the winter, and pairing the work within six months qualifies for the $2,000 bonus. We can size the heat pump for the house after the envelope work rather than before it.

Permit

The City of Longmont's Building Services, at the Development Services Center (385 Kimbark St.), issues the mechanical permit. We file it, coordinate electrical permits for any new circuit or panel work and schedule the inspection. If your older home's panel is short, we'll say so in the free, itemized estimate.
