Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Longmont
Longmont buys its electricity from its own city utility, Longmont Power & Communications, which changes the rebate math for a ductless mini-split. The housing mix matters too, from West Side homes built before 1930 to the New Urbanist streets of Prospect. Here is how we approach a ductless install in Longmont.
West Side Historic District homes
Houses in the West Side Historic District date from 1871 to about 1930. Many were built around boilers or gravity furnaces, and later ductwork often skipped the second floor or the sleeping porch. Ductless heads let you cool and heat those rooms without boxing ducts through closets. A ceiling cassette or a low floor-mounted console can look better than a wall head in a room with original trim.
Plan the outdoor unit for a rear or side yard and keep the line set off the street-facing facade. Our mini-split guide for older homes has more layout ideas.

Longmont Climate Note
Longmont sits at 4,981 ft with St. Vrain Creek floodplain in lower neighborhoods. Eastern Longmont gets significant wind exposure — we recommend sealed-combustion equipment.
Neighborhoods We Serve
Old Town Longmont, Prospect New Town, Southmoor Park, Northwoods, Fox Hill, Renaissance, Twin Peaks, Lake Park
Prospect New Town and later neighborhoods
Prospect New Town, begun in the mid-1990s, has compact lots, porches close to the sidewalk and garages off alleys. A rear-wall bracket is often the tidiest spot for the condenser. If you have a room above a detached garage, a single-zone unit is usually far easier than extending the house's ducts.
In Longmont's mid-century and later suburbs, mini-splits most often solve a basement, a converted garage or a hot upstairs bedroom.
Sizing and freeze protection
Boulder County's design temperature is 0°F, and the city's record low is -38°F, set in 1930. We size for 0°F and choose cold-climate models with published capacity in single digits. The outdoor unit sits on a stand above the roughly 32 inches of snow the city gets in a typical year, and condensate from indoor heads is routed to an interior drain or pump so it can't freeze in an exterior tube.
LPC electricity and Efficiency Works
Because LPC is city-owned, Xcel's electric heat pump rebates generally don't apply to these addresses. Instead, LPC offers rebates through Efficiency Works using a participating provider, and you apply within 45 days of installation. Efficiency Works also advertises a $2,000 bonus when a heat pump is paired with envelope upgrades. Per-unit 2026 amounts weren't verified, so check Efficiency Works before you sign.
Xcel still supplies gas locally, and installer summaries say some Xcel programs consider gas customers; confirm with Xcel.
State programs, permit and wiring
Longmont is in DRCOG, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate can apply to a cold-climate system in an existing home if we submit before work starts. On top of that, the state's 2026 heat pump credit is worth $1,000, a third of which must reach you as an invoice discount. Federal 25C ended after 2025.
The city's Building Services division issues permits at the Development Services Center on Kimbark Street. We pull the permit, run the dedicated 240-volt circuit and disconnect, and schedule the inspection.
Picking equipment and head locations
We size each head to the room it serves rather than the square footage of the house. For a single room, a single-zone unit is the most efficient choice. For a whole older house, a multi-zone outdoor unit or two single-zone units can cover the main floor and upstairs, depending on how the rooms connect.
Head placement in old houses takes some thought: we avoid plaster walls with knob-and-tube wiring behind them, keep heads off chimney chases, and plan the line set so it runs through framing rather than through original trim.

Ductless Mini-Split Installation FAQs — Longmont
Can an older panel handle a mini-split?
A single-zone unit usually fits. A whole-house system may need more capacity, which we check before quoting.
Do Xcel rebates apply to my Longmont mini-split?
Usually not for electricity, since LPC supplies power citywide. Look at Efficiency Works rebates through LPC instead.
How long do I have to apply for Efficiency Works?
Efficiency Works asks for applications within 45 days of installation.
Can a mini-split condition the room over my Prospect garage?
Yes. A single-zone unit is usually simpler than extending the house's ducts across the yard.
Who issues the permit in Longmont?
The city's Building Services division at the Development Services Center. We pull it, handle the inspection and close out the permit once the inspector signs off.
