Furnace Installation & Replacement in Longmont

Longmont has a split that matters when you replace a furnace: gas comes from Xcel Energy, but electricity comes from city-owned Longmont Power & Communications. That decides which rebates apply if you look at a heat pump. The housing runs from the 1870s West Side to Prospect New Town and later subdivisions.

West Side Historic District homes

The West Side Historic District has homes from 1871 to 1930. Furnaces in these houses were added well after construction, often in small basements or cellars, and many still vent through brick chimneys. If you stay with an 80% furnace, it must be an ultra-low NOx model, and the chimney needs to be inspected and lined for it. If you move to a condensing furnace, the PVC vent should go out a side or rear wall where possible, and any gas water heater left on the chimney needs a vent sized for it alone.

Longmont Climate Note

Longmont sits at 4,981 ft with St. Vrain Creek floodplain in lower neighborhoods. Eastern Longmont gets significant wind exposure — we recommend sealed-combustion equipment.

Neighborhoods We Serve

Old Town Longmont, Prospect New Town, Southmoor Park, Northwoods, Fox Hill, Renaissance, Twin Peaks, Lake Park

Midcentury to 2000s subdivisions

Much of Longmont grew after World War II, and the 41,680 housing units counted in 2020 include large areas of ranches, split-levels and two-stories from the 1960s through the 2000s. Furnaces from 2000s replacements are the main group coming due now. Prospect New Town, begun in the mid-1990s, has tighter homes on smaller lots; original furnaces there are near 25 years old, and side-yard space for vent terminations can be limited.

Sizing near 5,000 feet

At about 4,980 feet, Longmont is among the lowest cities we serve, but furnaces still lose about 20% of their sea-level rating. A 60,000 Btu/h input furnace runs at about 48,000 after high-altitude setup. Correct setup means more than a smaller rating on paper: the burner orifices and manifold pressure are changed to the manufacturer's high-altitude settings, and we confirm the temperature rise falls inside the furnace's listed range. We size from a Manual J. The city's record low is -38°F, set in 1930, but furnaces are sized for the design temperature, not the record, with comfort on the rare extreme nights coming from proper sizing and a tight house rather than an oversized furnace.

The 2026 NOx rule

New gas furnaces sold in Colorado since January 1, 2026 must meet 14 ng/J NOx or current ENERGY STAR certification, which since July 31, 2026 means about 97% AFUE in the North. Your existing furnace can stay and be repaired. When you replace it, we show the compliance path on the quote. See our NOx guide.

Permit, utilities and heat pumps through Efficiency Works

A furnace swap counts as gas and mechanical work, so Building Services needs a permit on file before we start. We submit it and book the inspection. Xcel holds the city's gas franchise, and a rebate tracker reports Xcel ended gas furnace rebates on January 1, 2026.

For electric-side incentives, LPC customers go through Efficiency Works, whose HVAC offers center on heat pumps, including add-on units that keep the gas furnace as backup. Its past rules required work by a listed provider and a claim within 45 days, so verify the current terms before buying. Colorado's $1,000 air-source credit and Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 cold-climate rebate also apply. Our dual-fuel guide explains pairing a heat pump with a furnace.

Furnace Installation FAQs — Longmont

Why don't Xcel heat pump rebates apply in Longmont?

Your electricity comes from Longmont Power & Communications, not Xcel. LPC's rebates run through Efficiency Works instead.

Can I keep my chimney in a West Side home?

With an ultra-low NOx 80% furnace and a chimney inspected and lined for it, yes. If you go condensing, we size the chimney for whatever gas appliance remains on it.

Do I need a permit for a furnace swap?

Yes. Replacing a furnace touches both the gas line and the mechanical system, so the city wants a permit. We file it.

Is my Prospect furnace due?

If it's original and around 25 years old, it's worth planning. A safety check and repair estimate help you decide on timing.

Can a condensing furnace vent into a narrow side yard?

Often, but the termination has to keep the clearances from windows, doors, gas meters and property lines in the manufacturer's instructions. Where a side yard is too tight, a roof termination is the usual alternative.
