AC Installation & Replacement in Longmont

Longmont's average July high is about 91 degrees and its record is 106, among the hottest in our service area. The city also runs its own electric utility, Longmont Power & Communications, which changes the rebate math for a new cooling system. We install central AC, heat pumps, and ductless systems with a Manual J, a permit through Longmont Building Services, and a written estimate.

LPC, Efficiency Works, and why heat pumps lead

Because electricity comes from city-owned LPC instead of Xcel, residential rebates are handled by Efficiency Works, which also serves Fort Collins, Loveland, and Estes Park. Its HVAC incentives focus on heat pumps, not standalone central AC. Efficiency Works has required the home to be at least a year old, the work to be done by one of its listed providers, and the application within 45 days of purchase. Confirm current terms before you sign.

State and regional incentives apply too. Colorado's 2026 air-source credit is $1,000, claimed by the contractor with at least $333 discounted on your invoice, and Power Ahead Colorado pays $1,500 for cold-climate units when filed before work starts. Gas still comes from Xcel, so a heat pump paired with your furnace is a common choice; see our dual-fuel guide.

Longmont Climate Note

Longmont sits at 4,981 ft with St. Vrain Creek floodplain in lower neighborhoods. Eastern Longmont gets significant wind exposure — we recommend sealed-combustion equipment.

West Side Historic District homes

Homes in the West Side Historic District date from 1871 to 1930. Many have a converted furnace with heat-only ducts or no forced air at all. Adding ducted cooling to a two-story Victorian usually means long runs to the upper floor and limited return air. A ductless or small-duct heat pump is often a better match, and it adds efficient heat. Equipment visible from the street may need historic review, so we plan condenser and line-set locations at the side or rear of the house where possible.

We also check the electrical service early. Older homes often have panels with no room for a 240-volt condenser circuit.

Prospect New Town and small-lot placement

Prospect New Town, begun in the mid-1990s, has narrow lots, alleys, and homes close together. Condenser placement is tight: units need clearance for airflow and service, and noise matters with neighbors a few feet away. We look at side yards, alley-facing pads, and line-set routes before committing, and quieter variable-speed equipment can be worth it here.

Many Prospect homes also have detached garages and accessory units over them. If you want to cool a garage apartment or studio, a separate ductless heat pump is usually more practical than extending the main system across the yard.

Sizing for Longmont heat

At about 4,980 feet, Longmont sits lower than much of the metro, but thin air still trims cooling capacity; a common industry factor, reported by ACHR News, is about 92 percent of rated dry-coil capacity at 5,000 feet. Summer heat in Longmont is real, so a Manual J that accounts for west-facing glass and attic insulation matters. Oversizing still causes short cycling and uneven rooms.

New split systems use R-454B or R-32 refrigerant with a matched indoor coil. DOE's North region minimum is 13.4 SEER2 for a split AC and 14.3 SEER2 for a split heat pump.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Longmont

Why doesn't Xcel handle my AC rebate in Longmont?

LPC, the city's electric utility, offers rebates through Efficiency Works. Xcel supplies gas, not electricity, in the city.

Is there an Efficiency Works rebate for a standard central AC?

Its HVAC incentives focus on heat pumps. Check current rules, since programs change.

How hot does it get, and how big should my system be?

Longmont's July average high is about 91 degrees with a record of 106. That does not mean a bigger unit; a Manual J based on your windows, insulation, and orientation sets the right size.

Who issues the permit?

City of Longmont Building Services at the Development Services Center, 385 Kimbark St. We pull it and schedule the inspection.

Do I need to apply for rebates before or after installation?

Efficiency Works has required applications within 45 days of purchase; Power Ahead Colorado must be filed before work starts. We track the paperwork so Longmont homeowners do not miss a deadline.
