AC Installation & Replacement in Sherrelwood

Walk any street in Sherrelwood and you will see roof-mounted swamp coolers next to AC condensers. The neighborhood's late-1950s and 1960s ranches were built without cooling, and owners added whichever kind they could. If you are switching to refrigerated air or replacing an old condenser, here is how we approach it.

Converting from a swamp cooler

An evaporative cooler usually blows into the house through its own ceiling grille, separate from the furnace ducts. Moving to central air means the cooling has to travel through the heating ducts instead. That raises two questions: is there room on the furnace for an indoor coil, and can the ducts carry cooling airflow?

Taking out the cooler is part of the job. We remove the unit, patch and flash the roof opening, cap the water line so it won't freeze or leak, and seal the ceiling grille or replace it with a properly insulated cover. An open cooler duct left over winter lets heated air escape straight through the roof.

Some owners prefer to keep the cooler for cheap cooling on dry days. That can work if its damper closes tightly in the off season, and it means maintaining two systems.

Sherrelwood Climate Note

Sherrelwood sits at about 5,292 feet north of Denver. The dry Front Range air is why evaporative coolers are still common alongside central air here.

Coils and ducts in 1960s ranches

Most Sherrelwood furnaces sit in a closet, basement or crawlspace with the ducts running to short branches. A cooling coil adds height to the furnace and resistance to the airflow. We check whether the furnace blower can handle it, and in closets we make sure there is room for the coil, the filter and a condensate drain. If the return is a single small grille, adding return capacity often matters more than the size of the outdoor unit.

If the furnace is old, replacing it at the same time keeps the system matched and avoids a coil adapter.

Panel and placement on a small lot

Many homes from this era still have 100-amp panels, and a condenser needs its own 240-volt circuit. We check capacity before choosing equipment. On small ranch lots, condensers end up wedged against fences or under dryer vents, where they recirculate hot air and pick up lint. We place the new unit with clearance on all sides, on a level pad, and away from the dryer vent and downspouts.

Noise matters on Sherrelwood's tightly spaced lots too. A condenser right under a neighbor's bedroom window can cause friction, and many newer two-stage and variable-speed units run noticeably quieter at low speed. We look at where the unit can go and which side yard gives it the best mix of airflow, service access and distance from windows.

Equipment standards in 2026

Most new split air conditioners sold in Colorado must meet at least 13.4 SEER2, and new equipment uses R-454B or R-32 refrigerant. If you are replacing an older R-22 or R-410A system, the indoor coil is replaced too, and we decide whether the line set can be reused. At about 5,300 feet, the coil loses a little capacity, which a load calculation accounts for. We quote the minimum option and a step up.

Permits and a heat pump alternative

In unincorporated Sherrelwood, Adams County requires a permit for air conditioning units; we file it and schedule the inspection.

A heat pump replaces a swamp cooler or old AC with cooling and efficient heating in one system. Colorado's 2026 credit is $1,000 per air-source heat pump, claimed by the registered contractor with at least $333 discounted on your invoice, and Power Ahead Colorado adds $1,500 for cold-climate models since Adams County is a DRCOG member. Federal 25C ended with 2025 installs. Our heat pump cost guide has regional numbers.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Sherrelwood

What happens to my swamp cooler when I add central air?

We remove it, patch the roof, cap the water line and seal the ceiling opening, unless you want to keep it with a tight damper.

Can my Sherrelwood ranch's ducts handle AC?

Often, with a larger or additional return. We measure airflow before quoting.

Do I need a new electrical panel?

Not always. We check whether your panel has space and capacity for the condenser circuit.

Is a permit required?

Yes. Adams County requires one for AC units in unincorporated areas.

How long does a swamp cooler conversion take?

Plan on a day for a simple swap and a second day if the furnace is replaced too or the roof opening needs more patching than expected.
