AC Installation & Replacement in Northglenn

Northglenn began in 1959 as Perl-Mack Enterprises' master-planned community, and its first phase was mostly single-story ranch homes. About 43 percent of the city's homes were built between 1940 and 1969, and many still lack central air or use a swamp cooler. That makes Northglenn one of the metro's busiest areas for first-time cooling installs, which we handle with a Manual J, a city permit, and a written estimate.

First-time central air in a Perl-Mack ranch

A single-story ranch is one of the easier homes to cool: short duct runs, one level, and a simple floor plan. The challenges are in the details. The furnace often sits in a utility room or closet with limited height for a new coil, ducts were sized for heat, and there is often a single return. We measure the closet, check the blower, and usually add return air so the system can move enough air for cooling.

If the furnace is original or close to it, replacing it with the coil, or with a heat pump and air handler, avoids pairing new cooling equipment with a blower near the end of its life. New split systems use R-454B or R-32 refrigerant, and the indoor coil and outdoor unit are installed as a matched pair.

Northglenn Climate Note

Northglenn at 5,364 ft has typical Front Range climate. Mid-century homes often need duct upgrades when modern high-CFM equipment is installed.

Electrical panels in 1960s homes

A central AC or heat pump needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and an outdoor disconnect within sight of the unit. Many homes from Northglenn's early years still have their original electrical service, sometimes with a panel already full of circuits. We read the new unit's minimum circuit ampacity and maximum breaker size against your panel during the estimate.

If the panel needs work, you will know before you commit. In some cases a variable-speed heat pump with a lower current draw fits an existing panel better than a standard unit.

Swamp cooler conversions

Evaporative coolers were the standard upgrade in many of these neighborhoods. Converting to central air means removing or disabling the cooler, sealing the roof or wall opening against air and water leaks, and creating a proper return path, since the cooler relied on open windows to move air. Done well, the house is quieter and holds temperature on humid late-summer days when a swamp cooler struggles. It also lets you keep windows closed on smoky or high-pollen days, which a cooler cannot do. Mature backyard trees in the older filings give good shade for a condenser, but we keep it clear of dropping leaves, seed fluff, and roof runoff.

Sizing, winters, and the heat pump question

At about 5,360 feet, cooling capacity is slightly reduced; industry guidance cited by ACHR News applies about a 0.92 correction at 5,000 feet. We size by Manual J, not by square footage. DOE's North region minimum is 13.4 SEER2 for a split AC and 14.3 SEER2 for a split heat pump.

Northglenn's record low is -24 degrees, which is why a heat pump here is usually paired with a gas furnace for the coldest nights. Xcel Energy supplies gas and electricity and has offered heat pump rebates, not standard AC rebates; its amounts changed October 1, 2026, so confirm them. For 2026, Colorado pays a $1,000 credit on air-source heat pumps through the contractor, with $333 or more passed to you, and Power Ahead Colorado offers $1,500 on cold-climate models applied for ahead of the work. Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Northglenn

Who issues AC permits in Northglenn?

The City of Northglenn Building Division at City Hall, with building services provided by SAFEbuilt. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection.

Can my ranch's ducts handle central air?

Usually, with added return air. We measure static pressure and the blower before quoting.

Do I need a new electrical panel?

Not always. We check your panel's capacity and space against the new unit's requirements during the estimate.

Will a heat pump keep my house warm at -20?

A cold-climate heat pump paired with a gas furnace handles it: the furnace takes over on the coldest nights.

Can I keep my swamp cooler as a backup?

Yes, if the opening is dampered and sealed when not in use, so the AC does not lose cooled air through it.
