Furnace Repair in Sherrelwood

Sherrelwood was largely built out by 1970, when the census already counted nearly 19,000 residents. That makes it one of the most consistent housing stocks north of Denver: late-1950s and 1960s ranch homes with gas forced-air heat. The furnaces have been replaced since, but the ducts, flues and closets they sit in are mostly original.

Sixty-year-old homes, newer furnaces

Homes in Sherrelwood Estates and the surrounding streets date from around 1959 into the 1960s. The typical layout is a single-story ranch, sometimes with a basement, heated by a natural gas furnace and forced-air ducts. Since the population was 18,868 in 1970 and 19,228 in 2020, the neighborhood has changed more through remodeling than through new construction.

That means the furnace in a Sherrelwood home is often its third or fourth, installed into a space designed for the first one. Replacement furnaces have different flue sizes, different airflow needs and sometimes different venting entirely, and the adaptations made to fit them are where we find a lot of problems.

Sherrelwood Climate Note

Sherrelwood sits at about 5,292 feet north of Denver. The dry Front Range air is why evaporative coolers are still common alongside central air here.

Venting, flues and combustion air

Original 1950s and 1960s furnaces vented into a chimney or metal flue through natural draft. When a newer mid-efficiency furnace replaced them, it often stayed on the same flue. If the flue is oversized for the new furnace, exhaust can cool too much on the way up, causing condensation and weak draft. Rusted connectors, missing screws and sections that sag toward the furnace are common finds.

Combustion air is the other concern. Ranch homes that have been sealed up with new windows and insulation, or furnaces in a closet that was later enclosed, can be short of the air a burner needs. We check draft and run a carbon monoxide and combustion safety test on every furnace we service.

Ducts built for a different furnace

Ductwork in Sherrelwood ranches was sized for the original equipment and often runs through a basement, crawlspace or attic with short branches to each room. Returns are frequently small, sometimes a single central grille. A modern furnace that moves more air than the original can be held back by that return, which shows up as noisy airflow, high temperature rise and limit-switch shutdowns.

We measure temperature rise and static pressure to see whether the ducts are limiting the furnace. Sometimes the fix is as simple as a different filter or opening a blocked return; sometimes it means adding return capacity.

Common parts that fail

Beyond the house-related issues, Sherrelwood furnaces fail in the usual ways. Hot surface igniters crack, flame sensors get dirty, inducer motors wear out, pressure switches stick and blower motors or capacitors give up. Control boards can fail too, especially after a power surge.

Our trucks carry common parts for Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, Bryant, Rheem and other major brands, so most of these repairs are done in one visit. We quote a flat-rate price before the work, the diagnostic is free when you approve the repair, and there are no overtime fees for evening, weekend or holiday calls.

Repair versus replacement, and Adams County permits

If your furnace is less than about 15 years old and the problem is a single component, repair is usually the economical choice. A cracked heat exchanger, an older furnace needing a major part, or a venting setup that needs rebuilding are reasons to compare replacement prices.

Sherrelwood is unincorporated, so furnace replacements are permitted through Adams County's Community and Economic Development Department. Furnace installation or replacement is on the county's list of projects that need a permit, and any contractor pulling one has to be registered with Adams County first.

Furnace Repair FAQs — Sherrelwood

Is Sherrelwood its own city?

No. Sherrelwood is an unincorporated community in Adams County with a Denver mailing address and the 80221 ZIP code. Permits come from Adams County.

My 1960s ranch has one return grille. Is that enough?

Often it is not enough for a modern furnace. We measure static pressure and temperature rise to see whether the return is limiting airflow.

Can a new furnace use my old chimney or flue?

Sometimes, but an old flue may be too large or damaged for a newer furnace. We check draft and the flue condition, and test for carbon monoxide on every visit.

Do you offer emergency furnace repair in Sherrelwood?

Yes. Emergency service is available 24/7, with no overtime fees.
