Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Sherrelwood
Sherrelwood had nearly 19,000 residents by 1970, so most houses here are late-1950s and 1960s ranches. Many still cool with an evaporative cooler on the roof or in a window. A ductless mini-split is one of the simplest ways to get real air conditioning, and a second heat source, into one of these compact homes.
Retiring the swamp cooler
A 1959 Sherrelwood Estates ranch was listed with forced-air gas heat and evaporative cooling, a very common pairing here. Evaporative coolers work on dry days but struggle during monsoon humidity and need the roof penetration sealed every fall. A mini-split head in the main living space, and maybe one in the primary bedroom, does the cooling with the windows closed.
When the cooler comes out, the roof or wall opening has to be closed properly, not just covered. We plan that patch as part of the job so the old duct drop doesn't become an air leak all winter.

Sherrelwood Climate Note
Sherrelwood sits at about 5,292 feet north of Denver. The dry Front Range air is why evaporative coolers are still common alongside central air here.

Why ductless fits a 1960s ranch
A 1962 ranch nearby had forced air and central air, but in many homes of that era the original ducts were sized for heating only and are too small to move cooling air. Rather than rebuild them, two or three heads on a multi-zone outdoor unit can handle the cooling while the gas furnace stays as the winter workhorse. On mild fall and spring days the mini-split can heat too.
Ranch attics are usually accessible, so line sets can drop through the ceiling to a head on an interior wall, which keeps the exterior clean.
Additions, garages and basements
Over 60 years, a lot of Sherrelwood homes picked up a family room addition, an enclosed porch or a converted garage that the furnace barely reaches. Those are classic single-zone jobs. One head, sized to that room's load, ends the space heater habit. Our mini-split guide for older houses shows typical layouts.
Freezing weather and line-set routing
Adams County's heating design temperature is 5°F, and the Sherrelwood area sits at about 5,292 feet. We choose models with published capacity at 5°F and set the condenser on a stand above snow and roof-drip lines. Condensate from the indoor head runs to a drain or pump inside the conditioned space wherever we can, because an outdoor drain tube freezes shut in January.
We seal every wall penetration and slope the line set back toward the outdoor unit so water can't track inside.
Permit, panel and incentives
Sherrelwood is unincorporated, so Adams County issues the permit and requires contractor registration. We handle both and schedule the inspection. Older 1960s panels are sometimes full or 100 amps; a single-zone unit usually fits, but a large multi-zone system may need panel work, which we tell you up front.
Federal 25C is gone for systems placed in service after 2025. Colorado's $1,000 heat pump credit for 2026 applies to qualifying air-source equipment, with at least $333 on the invoice. Power Ahead Colorado offers $1,500 for cold-climate heat pumps in DRCOG areas, and Adams County qualifies. Check your bill to see who supplies your electricity before counting on a utility rebate.
What a typical install day looks like
Most single-zone jobs take one day. We mount the wall bracket for the head, drill a single three-inch hole, set the outdoor unit, run and flare the copper line set, then pressure-test it with nitrogen and pull a deep vacuum before releasing refrigerant. Skipping the vacuum is the most common shortcut in ductless work and the reason some systems lose charge within a few years.
The electrician's part, a new breaker, the circuit and the outdoor disconnect, usually happens the same day. We finish by walking you through the remote, the filter and the settings for heating on cold mornings.

Ductless Mini-Split Installation FAQs — Sherrelwood
How often do the filters need cleaning?
Rinse the washable head filters every month or two during heavy use. We also recommend a yearly coil and drain check.
Can I remove my swamp cooler and use a mini-split instead?
Yes. We size the mini-split for the rooms the cooler served and seal the old roof or wall opening as part of the job.
Do I need to replace my furnace too?
No. Many Sherrelwood owners keep the gas furnace and use the mini-split for cooling and shoulder-season heat.
Is a permit required?
Yes. Adams County issues mechanical and electrical permits for unincorporated Sherrelwood, and we pull them.
Will my older electrical panel handle it?
A one-zone system usually fits. We check the panel before quoting, and if a larger system needs more capacity we explain the options.
