AC Installation & Replacement in Westminster
About 64 percent of Westminster's homes were built between 1970 and 1999, so most cooling projects here replace a second- or third-generation system in an existing duct layout. The city also has a large share of townhomes and older neighborhoods like Shaw Heights where central air is still new. We install central AC, heat pumps, and ductless systems with a Manual J, a permit from the Westminster Building Division, and a written estimate.
Replacing 1970s-1990s systems
In neighborhoods around Standley Lake, Wood Creek, and Westcliff, replacements are the norm. What has changed since the last one: new split systems use R-454B or R-32 refrigerant and need a matched indoor coil, and DOE's North region minimum is now 13.4 SEER2 for a split AC and 14.3 SEER2 for a split heat pump. A May 2026 EPA rule allows leftover R-410A equipment built before 2025 to be installed, but supply is limited.
Many of these homes have had additions, new windows, or finished basements since they were built. A Manual J captures those changes, and a duct check shows whether the old ducts can carry the airflow. Westminster sits around 5,325 feet, where cooling capacity is slightly reduced; industry guidance cited by ACHR News applies about a 0.92 correction at 5,000 feet.

Westminster Climate Note
Westminster's mix of newer and older neighborhoods means we work with everything from 1970s gravity furnaces to modern variable-speed systems.
Neighborhoods We Serve
Bradburn, Standley Lake, Legacy Ridge, Trailside, Wood Creek, Westcliff, Shaw Heights, North Park, Hidden Lake, Cotton Creek
Legacy Ridge and Trailside
Larger homes in Legacy Ridge and Trailside often have two-story layouts with one system and one thermostat. A replacement is the time to address the hot upstairs: zoning, added returns, or variable-speed equipment that runs longer at low output. These are HOA communities, so a relocated or added condenser may need approval.
Homes on open lots near golf courses and open space take the full force of hail and afternoon sun. We set condensers away from roof valleys and downspouts, keep clearance from landscaping and sprinkler spray, and offer hail guards where exposure is high.
Townhomes and attached homes
About 10 percent of Westminster's housing is townhomes. Condensers often share narrow side yards or pads behind the units, furnaces or air handlers sit in small closets, and HOAs control placement. We measure the closet, check line-set routes, and confirm placement rules before quoting. A ductless heat pump can be a good option for a hot top floor.
Shaw Heights and older southeast neighborhoods
Homes in Shaw Heights and Southeast Westminster date from the 1940s to 1960s and often lack central air or use a swamp cooler. The city lists both AC and evaporative cooler installation as permitted work. Adding central air means a coil on the furnace, more return air, and a dedicated 240-volt circuit; we check panel capacity during the estimate.
When converting from a swamp cooler, the roof opening is sealed and the return path rebuilt. When ducts are too small for cooling, ductless is often the better path; see our mini-split guide.
Heat pumps and incentives
Xcel Energy is the main electric utility, and United Power serves some addresses, so check your bill. Xcel has offered rebates on qualifying heat pumps but not on standard AC; amounts changed October 1, 2026, so confirm them. Colorado's 2026 air-source credit is $1,000, claimed by the contractor with at least $333 discounted on your invoice, and Power Ahead Colorado pays $1,500 for cold-climate units filed before work starts.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Westminster
Does Westminster require a permit for a new AC?
Yes. The Building Division lists AC installation or replacement, and evaporative cooler installation or replacement, as permitted work. We pull it.
Can I add central air to a Shaw Heights home?
Usually. We add a coil, return air, and an electrical circuit, and confirm your panel can carry it.
My townhome's furnace is in a tiny closet. Will a new system fit?
We measure before quoting. New coils can be taller, so sometimes the furnace and coil are replaced together.
Am I on Xcel or United Power?
Most Westminster homes are on Xcel Energy, but United Power serves some addresses. Your bill shows which, and rebates follow the utility.
Is a heat pump worth considering?
Yes. It cools like an AC and handles much of the winter heating, and it qualifies for incentives a standard AC does not.
