Furnace Installation & Replacement in Sherrelwood
Nearly every house in Sherrelwood went up between the late 1950s and 1970, and most have already gone through two or three furnaces. A new one usually lands in the same closet or basement corner as the first, on the same flue and the same ducts. That is where a good install earns its keep.
A ranch on its fourth furnace
The furnaces that came with homes in Sherrelwood Estates were low-output, slow-moving units by today's standards, and the ducts were sized to match. Each replacement since has been a little different: a new flue size, a stronger blower, sometimes a switch to PVC venting. When we quote a new furnace, we look at what earlier installers left behind, such as reducers in the flue, return grilles that were moved or covered, and gas lines extended with mismatched fittings, and clean up what needs it.

Sherrelwood Climate Note
Sherrelwood sits at about 5,292 feet north of Denver. The dry Front Range air is why evaporative coolers are still common alongside central air here.

Fixing the return while the furnace is out
The most common limit in these ranches is the return air. Many have one central grille feeding a furnace that now moves far more air than the original. A replacement is the cheapest moment to add a second return or enlarge the existing one, because the furnace cabinet and plenum are already open. It also lets us choose a variable-speed blower that runs quietly at lower speeds instead of a single-speed fan that roars through a small return.
We measure static pressure and temperature rise before and after, so you can see that the system is running within the manufacturer's range.
Venting choices after the 2026 NOx law
Under the state rule that started January 1, 2026, any new gas furnace sold must emit no more than 14 ng/J of NOx or carry the current ENERGY STAR label. For a closet furnace on an existing metal flue, an ultra-low NOx 80% model avoids cutting new holes through the roof or wall. For a basement furnace near an outside wall, a 97% condensing furnace with PVC venting and a condensate drain usually makes more sense.
Watch the water heater. In many of these houses it shares the flue with the furnace, and when the furnace switches to PVC, the water heater is left alone on a flue sized for two appliances. That can cause weak draft and condensation, so we test it and resize or line the vent when needed. Our NOx guide spells out what changed for homeowners.
Sizing a smaller house at 5,292 feet
Gas furnaces lose about 4% of their input for every 1,000 feet above sea level, so at 5,292 feet a properly set-up furnace delivers about 79% of its sea-level rating. Even so, many single-story ranches here have been fitted with more furnace than they need, especially after window replacements and attic insulation. We size from a Manual J and set the orifices and gas pressure for the altitude. A right-sized furnace runs longer, quieter cycles and keeps the house more even.
Adams County permits, and adding a heat pump
Sherrelwood is unincorporated, so furnace replacements are permitted through Adams County's Community and Economic Development Department, and the contractor must be registered with the county. We file the county paperwork and book the inspection for you.
If the air conditioner or swamp cooler is also due for replacement, a heat pump paired with the new furnace is worth a look. Adams County is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 cold-climate rebate is available here. Our heat pump vs. furnace guide compares the options.

Furnace Installation FAQs — Sherrelwood
Can you add a return when you replace my furnace?
Yes, and it is the best time to do it, since the plenum is already open. We measure static pressure first.
Will my water heater be affected by a new furnace?
It can be if the furnace stops using the shared flue. We test the water heater's draft and fix the vent if needed.
Does my small ranch need a big furnace for the altitude?
No. It needs one set up for about 5,300 feet and sized by a load calculation, which is often smaller than the old one.
Who issues the permit in Sherrelwood?
Adams County, since the area is unincorporated. We file it and book the inspection.
