AC Installation & Replacement in Berthoud

Berthoud's newer neighborhoods were built with central air, and many of those systems are approaching their first replacement. Older houses near downtown often got cooling decades after construction, if at all. We install new systems in both, sized by load calculation and permitted through the town.

Adding or replacing AC in older houses

Houses near Berthoud's historic core were built long before central air. If yours has none, the question is whether the furnace and ducts can carry cooling. We check the furnace blower, the return and static pressure. Ducts added room by room in an old house may be too small for good cooling airflow, and in those cases ductless mini-splits can be the better path.

Where central air was added years ago, the coil may be squeezed onto the furnace and the condenser near the end of its life. Replacing the whole system lets us correct those compromises.

Older homes also tend to have smaller electrical panels. A condenser needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, so we confirm space and capacity at the estimate. If an older fuse box or crowded panel needs attention, we tell you before the install date, not on it.

Berthoud Climate Note

Berthoud sits at about 5,033 feet in the Little Thompson valley along the northern Front Range. Construction dust from new subdivisions can coat outdoor AC coils during the summer.

Neighborhoods We Serve

Heron Lakes, Fickel Farms, Westside Crossing, Prairie Star, Vantage, Welch Addition

Patio homes and townhomes

Heron Lakes at TPC Colorado has patio homes built around 2020, and other newer neighborhoods include townhomes. Condensers there are often close together or tucked against the building behind decorative screens. A unit that is boxed in recirculates its own hot air and loses capacity. When we replace one, we keep clearances on all sides and check the HOA's rules on equipment and screening.

Builder systems reaching replacement

Original systems in Fickel Farms, Westside Crossing, Prairie Star and Vantage are mostly single-stage, minimum-efficiency equipment. When one fails out of warranty, a two-stage or variable-speed replacement can improve upstairs comfort. Current equipment uses R-454B or R-32 refrigerant with a matched coil, and most split air conditioners sold in Colorado must be at least 13.4 SEER2. You'll see a price for the code-minimum unit next to a higher-efficiency one.

Before a replacement, it's worth checking whether the original installer left a Manual J or duct design with the builder. Many builder systems were sized generously; a load calculation on the house as it stands, with its actual windows, finished basement and orientation, may show a smaller or two-stage unit runs better. We do that calculation ourselves either way.

Construction dust and placement

Ongoing construction in Berthoud's new subdivisions puts a lot of dust in the air, and it collects on condenser coils. We place new units away from where construction or landscaping debris collects and recommend keeping plants a couple of feet away. At about 5,033 feet, the load calculation accounts for a small loss in coil capacity without oversizing.

Permits and a heat pump alternative

Air conditioning is on the Town of Berthoud's list of projects that need a permit, and contractors must be licensed with the town. The town has adopted the 2024 International codes. We apply for it and set up the inspection.

Since Xcel Energy is listed as the main electric provider, Xcel's heat pump rebates may apply if you choose a heat pump instead of an AC; amounts changed October 1, 2026, so confirm them. Colorado's 2026 heat pump credit is $1,000, claimed by the registered contractor with at least $333 off your invoice. Berthoud is outside DRCOG, so Power Ahead Colorado's rebate generally won't apply, and the federal 25C credit ended after 2025. Compare options in our heat pump vs. furnace guide.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Berthoud

Can my older Berthoud home get central air?

Usually, if the furnace and ducts can carry cooling. Where they can't, ductless mini-splits work well.

Why does my patio home's AC struggle on hot days?

Often because the condenser is boxed in and recirculating hot air. Placement and clearance matter.

Do I need a permit for AC in Berthoud?

Yes. Air conditioning is on the town's permit list.

How long does an AC replacement take?

Most straight replacements take a day. Adding central air to an older home with duct or electrical work can take two.

Do Power Ahead rebates apply?

Generally not, since Berthoud isn't in the DRCOG region. Xcel rebates and the state credit may.
