Heat Pump Installation in Berthoud

Heat pump incentives in Berthoud work differently than in most of the Denver metro. The town sits in Larimer and Weld counties, outside the DRCOG region, so Power Ahead Colorado's rebate generally isn't available. Xcel Energy service and the state tax credit still make a heat pump worth pricing, especially as many Berthoud air conditioners reach their first replacement.

What incentives apply

Colorado's 2026 heat pump tax credit is $1,000 for an air-source system. A registered contractor claims it and passes at least $333 to you as an invoice discount. There's no federal 25C credit for equipment installed after 2025.

Xcel Energy is listed as Berthoud's main gas and electric provider, so Xcel's heat pump rebates should be available. Installers report they changed on October 1, 2026, and we couldn't confirm the new figures on Xcel's site, so verify them with Xcel before you commit.

Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate is run by DRCOG for its member area. Berthoud, Larimer County and Weld County aren't on DRCOG's member list, so we don't count on it here. Our rebates guide explains each program.

Berthoud Climate Note

Berthoud sits at about 5,033 feet in the Little Thompson valley along the northern Front Range. Construction dust from new subdivisions can coat outdoor AC coils during the summer.

Neighborhoods We Serve

Heron Lakes, Fickel Farms, Westside Crossing, Prairie Star, Vantage, Welch Addition

Sizing for the northern Front Range

Larimer County's ENERGY STAR design temperature is 3°F, and Weld County's is 0°F. We run a Manual J at the right value for your address and choose equipment by its published low-temperature output, corrected for altitude; NREL measured about 5 to 7 percent less capacity at Golden's elevation than at sea level. Below the heat pump's balance point, the furnace or backup strips take over. Our sizing guide walks through it.

Newer subdivisions

Homes in Heron Lakes, Fickel Farms, Westside Crossing, Prairie Star and Vantage generally have central ducts, condenser pads and electrical service that can support a heat pump. When the original AC fails, replacing it with a cold-climate heat pump and adding dual-fuel controls to the existing furnace costs only modestly more than a straight AC. In tighter newer homes, the heat pump can often carry most of the winter.

Patio homes and townhomes need a little more planning. Outdoor units sit close together, and a heat pump runs year-round, so we leave room for winter defrost drainage and keep it away from walkways where meltwater could refreeze. HOA rules on equipment placement and screening apply here too.

Older homes near downtown

Older houses near the historic core may have small ducts and limited electrical service. Ductless mini-splits avoid the duct problem, and keeping the gas furnace as backup avoids a panel upgrade. We check the panel and ducts before recommending a design.

Many of these homes never had central air, so a ductless heat pump adds cooling for the first time while trimming gas use in spring and fall. Indoor heads go in the main living area and bedrooms, and the existing heat stays in place for the coldest nights. Our ductless guide shows typical layouts.

Permits and running costs

The Town of Berthoud requires permits for heating and cooling equipment, and contractors must be licensed with the town. The 2024 International codes apply. We file the permit, coordinate the electrical work and schedule the inspection.

At current prices, a high-efficiency gas furnace usually costs less per unit of heat on the coldest nights, while the heat pump wins in milder weather. We set the dual-fuel switchover from your Xcel rates. See our dual-fuel guide.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Berthoud

Is Power Ahead available in Berthoud?

Generally no. The program serves DRCOG members, and Berthoud and its counties aren't on that list.

What incentives can I get?

Colorado's $1,000 heat pump credit (at least $333 off your invoice) and Xcel's heat pump rebates. Confirm Xcel's current amounts.

What design temperature do you use in Berthoud?

Larimer County's 3°F for most homes, or Weld County's 0°F on the Weld side.

Will a heat pump work through a northern Colorado winter?

Cold-climate models produce useful heat well below freezing. With a furnace or strips as backup, the house stays warm on the coldest nights.

Is my Heron Lakes home ready for a heat pump?

Usually. Newer homes typically have suitable ducts and electrical service.
