Furnace Installation & Replacement in Berthoud

Berthoud has two kinds of furnace replacements. In the older blocks around downtown and the Welch Addition, furnaces sit in basements and crawlspaces that were never built for them. In Heron Lakes, Fickel Farms and Westside Crossing, the originals are young, and the first replacements are a few years out. We plan each job from a load calculation and the town's permit requirements.

Older houses near the historic core

Berthoud moved to its current bluff above the Little Thompson in 1883 and 1884, and the Welch Addition followed in 1886. Houses from the town's early decades were heated with stoves or boilers, and gas forced air came later. That history often leaves a furnace in a low basement or crawlspace, a long flue connector running to an old chimney, and ducts that were added room by room.

Before choosing equipment, we look at the chimney, the return path and service access. A condensing furnace with PVC venting can free the furnace from a deteriorating chimney entirely, which is often the cleaner answer in these homes. If the water heater stays on the chimney alone, we check that it still drafts properly or reline the flue.

Berthoud Climate Note

Berthoud sits at about 5,033 feet in the Little Thompson valley along the northern Front Range. Construction dust from new subdivisions can coat outdoor AC coils during the summer.

Planning ahead in newer subdivisions

Most furnaces in Heron Lakes at TPC Colorado, Fickel Farms, Westside Crossing, Prairie Star and Vantage are less than ten years old. If yours fails early, check the manufacturer's parts warranty before replacing anything. When replacement does come, these homes are simple installs: existing PVC vents, basements or mechanical rooms with room to work, and ducts designed for central air. The decision is usually whether to upgrade a builder single-stage furnace to two-stage or variable-speed for quieter, more even heat in a two-story house, and whether to add a heat pump at the same time.

NOx rules and altitude

Colorado now limits new gas furnaces to 14 ng/J of NOx, or the current ENERGY STAR version, for units sold from January 1, 2026. Most Berthoud installs will be 97% condensing furnaces, which meet the rule and suit both older homes leaving a chimney and newer homes already vented in PVC. Our NOx guide covers the choices.

At about 5,033 feet, a gas furnace delivers roughly 80% of its sea-level input after high-altitude setup. We size from a Manual J at the Larimer County design temperature and set orifices and gas pressure for the elevation. Older houses that have had insulation and window upgrades often need a smaller furnace than the one coming out.

Larger homes in the newer neighborhoods raise the opposite question. A two-story house with a finished basement can have very different loads on each floor, and a single furnace sized for the whole house may still leave the upper level warm in summer and cool in winter. Zoning with motorized dampers, or a variable-speed furnace that runs long, low cycles, often fixes that better than more capacity.

Town permits and the 2024 codes

The Town of Berthoud Building Department lists furnaces among the projects that require a permit, and contractors must be licensed with the town before applying. The town has adopted the 2024 International codes, including the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code. The permit application and inspection booking are handled by our office.

Utilities and incentives

Xcel Energy is listed as the town's main gas and electric provider, so check your bill and Xcel's current offerings if you are considering a high-efficiency furnace or a heat pump. One difference from the Denver suburbs: the town isn't a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's heat pump rebate generally doesn't apply here. Colorado's $1,000 air-source heat pump credit still does. Our dual-fuel guide explains pairing a heat pump with a new furnace.

Furnace Installation FAQs — Berthoud

Can I keep my old chimney when I replace the furnace?

Sometimes, but in older Berthoud homes a condensing furnace vented in PVC is often the better choice. We check the chimney either way.

My Fickel Farms furnace failed early. Replace it?

Look up the manufacturer's parts warranty first; a covered part can make repair the obvious choice.

Does the town require a permit for a furnace?

Yes. Furnaces are on the town's permit list, and contractors must be licensed with the town.

Is Power Ahead available in Berthoud?

Generally not, since the town isn't a DRCOG member. The state heat pump credit and Xcel rebates still apply.
