AC Installation & Replacement in Lyons
Three things set Lyons apart for cooling work: a town-owned electric utility, river corridors that flooded badly in 2013, and a downtown built of red sandstone. Each of those facts shapes an air conditioning install here. We plan around them, size the system from a load calculation and give you a written quote.
Your electric service and panel capacity
The town operates a municipal electric utility that buys power from the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska. Under the town code, customers who request a higher-amp service or a larger service wire must put their service line underground, at their expense, from the transformer to the panel. That makes a service upgrade a bigger project here than in most towns.
So we look carefully at whether a new condenser fits your existing service. Many do: a modest AC on a dedicated circuit may need only panel space, not a bigger service. A heat pump with electric resistance backup is a different story, which is one reason we often pair heat pumps with the existing gas or propane furnace instead.

Lyons Climate Note
At about 5,341 feet at the mouth of the foothills, Lyons gets cold canyon-edge winter nights and warm summer days, and many areas of town lie in the mapped floodplain.

Downtown Lyons historic district, Steamboat Valley, outlying foothill properties
Floodplain homes and outdoor equipment
The 2013 flood reshaped how the town regulates building near the St. Vrain, and any work inside the mapped floodplain needs its own floodplain development permit on top of the building permit. Outdoor units in mapped flood areas generally need to sit above the regulated flood elevation, which can mean a raised platform or a wall bracket. We check your parcel's floodplain status before choosing a location and include the permit in the plan.
Sandstone buildings and older homes
The historic district's buildings date from the early 1870s to 1917, and their thick sandstone walls are hard to run new ducts through. Ductless mini-splits suit them well, with small line-set penetrations and an outdoor unit kept out of the street view. Steamboat Valley's 1990s houses are a simpler case, typically built with forced-air heat that a new coil and condenser can join. Outlying properties on propane, wells and septic often add cooling for the first time, and a heat pump can cut propane use there as well. Our cold-weather heat pump guide covers performance.
Permits through SAFEbuilt
Building review and inspections in town are outsourced to SAFEbuilt, and submissions go in online. Only a contractor who holds a license issued by the town can be the permit applicant. Since July 1, 2026, plans have been checked against the 2024 ICC codes. We take care of the submittal and meet the inspector on site.
Timing matters in a small town with contracted inspectors. We order equipment after the permit is in hand, so your old system keeps running until the day of the swap.
Rebates, refrigerant and sizing
Because Lyons customers buy power from the town, Xcel's electric rebates do not apply. The town points residents to Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska efficiency programs and Boulder County programs, so check what MEAN currently offers for heat pumps or AC before you buy. State and regional incentives are independent of utility. Colorado's 2026 tax credit of $1,000 per air-source heat pump flows through the contractor, who must hand at least $333 of it to you, and DRCOG's Power Ahead program adds $1,500 for a cold-climate model reserved before installation. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025.
On the hardware side, today's condensers are charged with R-454B or R-32, and a coil designed for that refrigerant goes in with them. At about 5,340 feet, a Manual J accounts for the slight capacity loss from altitude without oversizing.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Lyons
Will a new AC require a bigger electric service in Lyons?
Often not; many condensers fit an existing service. If an upgrade is needed, town code requires undergrounding the service line at the owner's expense.
Does a floodplain address rule out central air?
Yes, with a separate floodplain development permit and the outdoor unit placed above the regulated flood elevation.
Do Xcel rebates apply here?
No. The town provides electricity, and it points residents to MEAN and Boulder County programs.
Can any HVAC contractor pull a Lyons permit?
No. The applicant needs a license from the town, and SAFEbuilt handles the review.
