AC Installation & Replacement in Lafayette

Lafayette started as a coal-mining town, and its housing runs from small Old Town homes to the subdivisions that tripled the population between 1980 and 2000. Many of those later homes are on their original or second air conditioner, while older houses near downtown are adding cooling for the first time. Either way, the job starts with a load calculation and ends with a written price.

Quick permits and the August 2026 code update

The City of Lafayette offers contractor-only quick permits for replacing an AC, with or without a furnace, through its GovBuilt portal. Subcontractors on the job must hold a City license. A code change took effect on August 1, 2026: the city moved to the 2024 International Codes, adopted the regional cohort energy code derived from the 2024 IECC, and began enforcing the 2026 National Electrical Code. A first-time installation is more than a swap, so it may need more than the quick-permit path; we handle whichever applies and the inspection.

Lafayette Climate Note

Lafayette sits at about 5,266 ft with the foothills visible to the west. Cooler nights year-round; lots of homes use heat pumps and dual-fuel systems for efficiency.

First-time cooling in Old Town

Old Town's small houses often have a compact furnace in a basement or closet with modest ducts. Adding central air works when the furnace blower and return can support a coil; when they cannot, the cost of fixing the ducts can outrun a ductless system. We measure first and tell you which approach makes sense. Our ductless guide for older homes lays out the trade-offs.

Narrow side yards and mature trees make placement tricky. A condenser needs clearance on all sides, and we avoid spots under cottonwoods or tight against a neighbor's bedroom.

Replacing the original system in Indian Peaks and Coal Creek Village

Neighborhoods built in the 1980s and 1990s, including Indian Peaks and Coal Creek Village, are well into replacement age. A new condenser now uses R-454B or R-32, so the indoor coil changes too, and we inspect the line set to decide if it can stay. When the furnace underneath is about as old as the condenser, doing both in one visit matches the blower to the coil and saves a second permit.

The city's building code design data lists a 145-mph design wind speed, so outdoor units need a solid, properly anchored pad. Hail is another concern on the open east side of town.

Sizing for summer highs

July highs average around 86 degrees here, and at about 5,270 feet, coils lose some capacity compared with sea level; the industry figure cited by ACHR News is roughly 0.92 at 5,000 feet. A Manual J balances that against your home's insulation, windows and orientation, so the system runs long, steady cycles instead of short blasts. Bigger is not better: an oversized unit leaves rooms clammy.

Heat pumps, Switch Together and your utility

Xcel Energy is the listed provider for both electricity and gas, according to a utility directory; the bill is the final word. The city has backed the county's Switch Together group-buy for heat pumps, which reflects a broader local push away from cooling-only equipment. Because a heat pump cools identically and heats as well, we put one in every quote. Xcel posted new heat pump rebate amounts in October 2026; check them before you sign.

Colorado's 2026 credit gives $1,000 for each air-source heat pump, taken by the registered contractor with no less than $333 returned to you on the invoice. As a Boulder County city, Lafayette also falls under DRCOG's Power Ahead Colorado, worth $1,500 on a cold-climate model if the installer files first. The federal 25C credit expired after 2025.
