AC Installation & Replacement in Superior

Superior's housing has two stories. Rock Creek Ranch and the other 1990s neighborhoods are full of original or second-generation air conditioners, while the Marshall Fire rebuilds in Sagamore and Original Town are new, tighter homes with very different cooling loads. We install for both, with a load calculation, the town permit and a written quote.

Replacing aging systems in Rock Creek Ranch

Rock Creek Ranch drove the town's growth from about 250 residents to more than 9,000 by 2000, so many of its homes are on equipment that is 15 to 25 years old. A replacement today involves a new refrigerant: condensers built since 2025 use R-454B or R-32, so a matching indoor coil goes in with the outdoor unit. We check whether the line set is reusable and whether the furnace is close enough to retirement to replace together.

Two-story homes here commonly run warm upstairs. A variable-speed blower and a properly sized upstairs return usually solve more than extra tonnage, and we measure static pressure before recommending either.

Superior Climate Note

Superior at about 5,522 ft sits between Boulder and the Denver suburbs. Heat pumps and dual-fuel systems work exceptionally well; advanced air filtration is essential post-Marshall Fire.

Cooling a Marshall Fire rebuild

Of the 393 homes Superior lost on December 30, 2021, Sagamore was wiped out entirely and Original Town nearly so. According to Boulder County, about seven in ten rebuild permits it tracked met the 2021 IECC or exceeded it. Tight envelopes, better windows and more insulation mean these homes need much less cooling capacity than the houses they replaced, and sizing them like a 1990s home leads to short cycling.

If you are still building or finishing a rebuild, the load calculation should come before equipment is ordered. Many rebuilds went all-electric or added heat pumps; if yours has a straight AC, it can be worth looking at a heat pump when that unit needs replacing.

Wind and placement

The Town of Superior lists a design wind speed of 154 mph, and residents saw in December 2021 what wind can do here. Outdoor units need a solid pad and proper anchoring, and line sets and electrical whips should be secured against vibration. We also keep equipment away from fences and landscaping that can trap debris against the coil.

Town permits and codes

The Town of Superior Building Department enforces the 2018 IRC, IMC and IFGC and the 2021 IECC, with town amendments. AC installs need a permit and inspection, which we arrange. At about 5,520 feet, coils deliver a bit less than their sea-level rating; ACHR News cites roughly 0.92 at 5,000 feet, and we account for that in the Manual J without upsizing. Any new split air conditioner must rate at least 13.4 SEER2.

Utility programs and the heat pump option

After the fire, Xcel Energy ran rebuild incentives for Superior homeowners. Its regular heat pump rebate schedule is a separate matter and was reset in October 2026; ask Xcel what applies to your address today. Boulder County has also run the Switch Together heat pump purchasing program.

For 2026, a qualifying air-source heat pump earns a $1,000 Colorado credit, which the contractor claims while discounting your invoice by at least $333, and Power Ahead Colorado pays $1,500 for cold-climate models in existing homes if registered first. Homes still under construction do not qualify for Power Ahead. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025. Compare costs with our heat pump versus furnace guide.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Superior

My Rock Creek Ranch AC is 20 years old. Should I replace the furnace too?

If the furnace is similar in age, replacing both keeps the coil and blower matched. We check its condition before recommending it.

Does a Marshall Fire rebuild need a smaller AC?

Usually. A tighter, better-insulated house gains less heat, so its load calculation tends to come in well below the old home's.

Why does wind matter for AC installation in Superior?

The town lists a 154-mph design wind speed. Outdoor units need solid pads and proper anchoring.

Does Power Ahead Colorado cover my rebuild?

Not while the home is under construction. Once it is an existing home, a qualifying replacement can be eligible.

Can I add a ductless unit to a rebuild instead of more ductwork?

Yes. In tight new homes, a single ductless head for a bonus room or office is often simpler than extending the central system.
