AC Installation & Replacement in Mead

Mead has grown from a farm town of a few hundred people in 1990 to an estimated 6,450 in 2023, which leaves it with some of the youngest housing in the metro area. Many homes in Liberty Ranch and The Highlands are less than ten years old. AC work here is mostly adding cooling to homes built without it, upgrading builder-grade systems and planning ahead on new construction. We size each job from a load calculation and quote in writing.

Adding AC to a newer home built without it

Some newer homes are delivered with heating only, and central air added later. The furnace and ducts are usually close to cooling-ready, but builders size ducts for minimum cost, and bedrooms at the end of long runs or over the garage are typical hot spots. We check static pressure and return sizing before choosing equipment, and in many homes an upstairs return or a few duct adjustments matter as much as the condenser.

Newer homes usually have 200-amp service, but a finished basement, EV charger or hot tub can fill the panel. We confirm space and capacity for the condenser circuit first.

Mead Climate Note

Mead sits at about 5,017 feet on the northern Colorado plains, with cold winter snaps, wind and hot, dry summer afternoons.

Upgrading builder-grade systems

Builder systems are usually minimum-efficiency and single-stage, and in Liberty Ranch's 2010s homes, many are now past their first decade of service. If yours is struggling, the fix may be a variable-speed blower or a two-stage system rather than a larger one. When it is time to replace, current equipment uses R-454B or R-32 refrigerant with a matched coil, and the minimum for a new split AC in Colorado is 13.4 SEER2. We quote the minimum and at least one step up.

Homes still under construction in The Highlands

If you are buying new, the best time to fix cooling is before drywall. Ask your builder for the Manual J and duct design, and consider upgrading to a heat pump or a better system at the builder stage. Note that Power Ahead Colorado's rebate covers existing homes, not homes under construction, so the incentive picture changes once you have closed and moved in.

Permits, HOAs and placement

Whether the AC is new or a replacement, the town building division wants a permit for it; our office files and books the inspection. Most subdivisions here have HOAs with rules on visible equipment, so check yours before a condenser moves or a second unit goes in. Open lots on the plains face hail and wind, so we choose a placement with some shelter and leave proper clearance. At about 5,020 feet, the altitude loss in coil capacity is modest, and a Manual J accounts for it.

United Power or Xcel, and the heat pump comparison

The town's resource directory lists both United Power and Xcel Energy for electricity, and both Xcel and Black Hills Energy for gas, depending on location. Your bills tell you which, and utility rebates follow them; Xcel revised its heat pump amounts in October 2026.

A heat pump is worth pricing alongside any AC here, since a newer, tighter home is an excellent fit for one. Colorado's 2026 credit is $1,000 per air-source heat pump, which the registered contractor claims while discounting at least $333 on your invoice. DRCOG's Power Ahead Colorado adds $1,500 for a cold-climate model in an existing home, but only inside the council's region; we look up your Mead address before counting on it. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025. Our heat pump versus furnace guide can help you compare.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Mead

My Mead home was built without AC. Is it ready for central air?

Usually close. We check the furnace blower, return size and static pressure, and confirm panel space, before quoting.

Do I need a permit to add AC in Mead?

Yes, for new and replacement air conditioners alike. We handle it.

Which electric company serves my address?

The town lists United Power and Xcel Energy, split by location. Your bill shows which.

Can I add a ductless unit instead of central air?

Yes, for a single hot room such as a bonus room over the garage. For whole-house cooling, central air or a ducted heat pump is usually more economical.

I'm building in The Highlands. Should I upgrade HVAC with the builder?

If you can. Ducts and equipment are easiest to change before drywall, and Power Ahead does not cover homes under construction.
