Heat Pump Repair in Aurora
Aurora spreads east onto open plains, and the farther out you live, the more wind your heat pump faces. Snow drifts against the outdoor unit, grit packs the coil and storms roll in with little to slow them down. Those conditions shape most of the heat pump repairs we handle across the city.
Drifting snow and blocked airflow
In southeast subdivisions like Saddle Rock and Tallyn's Reach, homes back onto open space, and a strong wind can bury the side of a condenser in a single storm. A heat pump needs to pull air through its coil to make heat. Once a drift covers the intake, the coil frosts faster than defrost can clear it, and the system leans on backup heat.
Keep at least a foot or two of open space around the unit and brush snow off the top and sides after storms, gently, with a broom rather than a shovel blade. If your unit sits directly on a slab, a raised stand or wall bracket keeps it above typical drift lines. We install stands during repairs when the unit keeps getting buried.

Aurora Climate Note
Aurora's mix of older homes (50+ years) and new builds means we work with everything from gravity furnaces to ultra-modern heat pumps. Dust and pollen are higher than west metro.

When defrost goes wrong
Normal defrost takes a few minutes. The outdoor fan stops, the unit hisses, and steam rises. Problems look different: ice thick enough to hide the coil, ice building on the fan blades, or a unit that runs in defrost so long the house cools down. We test the defrost sensor and board, check that the outdoor fan restarts, and measure refrigerant pressures, because an undercharged system frosts heavily and never quite clears.
Backup heat that never shuts off
Aurora's design heating temperature is about 4°F, and a properly sized cold-climate heat pump should carry most winter days without help. If your electric strips or furnace run constantly, something is off. The heat pump may have stopped producing heat while the thermostat covers for it, or the thermostat may be configured with no outdoor lockout. Emergency heat left on after a cold snap is another common one.
With a gas furnace as backup, check the switchover point. Many systems ship with a conservative setting that hands off to gas earlier than needed, or never hands off because the outdoor sensor isn't connected. Our guide to heat pumps in Denver-area winters covers what a working system should do at different temperatures.
Hail, fan motors and capacitors
Hail does real damage to outdoor coils on the plains. Flattened fins reduce airflow in both heating and cooling seasons, and a direct hit can puncture a tube. If you file a roof claim after a storm, have the heat pump inspected at the same time and photograph the coil.
The outdoor fan motor and its run capacitor are the most common electrical failures we see year-round. A unit that hums without spinning, or a fan that starts only when nudged, usually has a weak capacitor. It's a quick repair if caught before the motor overheats.
Older homes, newer homes and replacement
Hoffman Heights' early-1950s houses and the city's large 1970s and 80s neighborhoods mostly started with furnaces and central AC. Where a heat pump has replaced the old AC, the furnace often stays as backup. Newer master-planned homes tend to have newer equipment still under manufacturer warranty if it was registered.
When a repair runs into the compressor or reversing valve on an older unit, we price replacement alongside it. A cold-climate replacement may earn $1,500 through Power Ahead Colorado, which the contractor requests before installation, along with the $1,000 state credit. Xcel's rebate amounts changed in October 2026, so confirm them directly. We pull the permit through the City of Aurora's Aurora4Biz portal.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Aurora
Should I cover my heat pump in winter?
No. A heat pump runs all winter, and a cover blocks airflow. Clear snow instead, and keep the top free of ice.
Why is my heat pump outdoor fan not spinning?
A failed capacitor or fan motor is most likely. During defrost the fan stops on purpose for a few minutes, so watch for a while before calling.
Is backup heat supposed to run in Aurora?
Briefly, on the coldest nights and during defrost. Running all the time points to a heat pump or thermostat problem.
Can hail damage be fixed without replacing the unit?
Often. Bent fins can be straightened, and a coil is only replaced if a tube is punctured or the damage is widespread.
