Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Frederick
Frederick had fewer than 900 housing units in 2000 and nearly 5,000 by 2020, so most homes here are newer and ducted. Ductless mini-splits come up for finished basements, garage conversions, Old Town houses and outbuildings on acreage. The town's own code sets several numbers that shape the install.
What Frederick's building code specifies
The Town of Frederick has adopted the 2024 IRC, IMC, IFGC and IECC with local amendments, plus the Colorado Model Electric Ready and Solar Ready Code. Its design criteria list a winter temperature of 1°F, 115 mph wind and a 30 psf snow load. We size heating to that 1°F figure and choose cold-climate models whose spec sheets show real output at 5°F and below.
Because newer homes were built under electric-ready rules, panel space for a mini-split circuit is often already there. We still verify before quoting.

Frederick Climate Note
Frederick sits at about 4,938 ft on the open prairie, with strong winter winds and rapid temperature drops. Sealed-combustion furnaces and well-sealed ductwork are essential.
Neighborhoods We Serve
Wyndham Hill, Eagle Valley, Maple Ridge, Stoney Creek, Tipple Parkway, Silverstone, Saddleback Heights
Subdivisions: Wyndham Hill and Rinn Valley Ranch
In Wyndham Hill, Rinn Valley Ranch and Johnson Farm, most mini-split calls involve a basement being finished, a bonus room that runs hot, or a garage turned into a gym or office. A single-zone unit handles any one of those. If two problem rooms sit on the same side of the house, one two-zone outdoor unit can serve both. Check your HOA's rules on equipment visible from the street before we choose a spot.
Old Town Frederick
Frederick began as a coal-mining town in 1907, and Old Town has some smaller older houses that predate central air. Those can be good whole-house candidates, with two or three heads replacing window units and supplementing an old furnace. Our mini-split guide for older homes covers layouts.
Shops and barns at Nelson Lakes
Acreage parcels around Nelson Lakes often include a detached shop or barn. Running gas or ducts out there is rarely practical; a single-zone heat pump on its own circuit keeps a workspace usable in January and July. We size for the weaker insulation typical of outbuildings, and we mount the condenser where trucks and snow removal won't hit it.
What a typical Frederick job looks like
For a single room, the work usually fits in one day: mount the indoor head, drill one penetration, set the outdoor unit on a stand, run and flare the copper line set, then pressure-test with nitrogen and pull a deep vacuum before opening the refrigerant valves. That vacuum step is what keeps the system from losing charge over the years.
The circuit, breaker and outdoor disconnect go in the same day. Before we leave, we set the head to heat properly on cold mornings and show you how to clean the washable filter.
Condensate and line sets in freezing weather
Indoor heads produce water in summer and the outdoor unit sheds meltwater in winter defrost. We run indoor drains to an interior connection or a pump, keep the outdoor pad clear so ice can't build up under the coil, and slope line sets so water can't track into the wall.
Utilities, permit and incentives
The town's new resident kit lists Black Hills Energy for gas and United Power for electricity. That means Xcel rebates generally don't apply. Black Hills has no heat pump rebate on its 2026 Colorado form, and United Power's 2026 heat pump amounts weren't verified, so ask United Power. The Town of Frederick Building Department issues the permit; we pull it and schedule the inspection.
Frederick is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate can apply to cold-climate systems in existing homes when we submit before work starts; new construction is excluded. Separately, Colorado's credit is $1,000 per qualifying system this year, at least $333 of it as an upfront discount. The federal 25C credit has ended.
