Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Lafayette

Lafayette was platted in 1888 as a coal-mining town, and Old Town still has small houses built long before central air. The city also gets about 65 inches of snow a year, much more than Denver. Both facts shape a ductless mini-split install in Lafayette.

Old Town miners' houses

Old Town Lafayette's small frame houses often have shallow crawlspaces, low attics and rooms added over the decades. Fitting ductwork into them is hard. A two- or three-head mini-split can heat and cool the whole house, or you can keep the existing furnace and add heads for summer. See our mini-split guide for older homes.

Because these houses sit close to the street, we usually place the condenser beside or behind the house and run the line set in a cover painted to match the siding.

Lafayette Climate Note

Lafayette sits at about 5,266 ft with the foothills visible to the west. Cooler nights year-round; lots of homes use heat pumps and dual-fuel systems for efficiency.

Suburban homes in Indian Peaks and near Waneka Lake

Lafayette grew from about 9,000 residents in 1980 to over 23,000 by 2000, so much of the city is two-story suburban housing. In neighborhoods such as Indian Peaks and around Waneka Lake, a mini-split usually targets one problem: a bonus room over the garage, a finished basement or a home office that never matches the thermostat. Check HOA rules about visible outdoor equipment before we pick a location.

Built for snow and wind

The city's building design criteria include a 40 psf snow load and 145 mph wind. For a condenser, that means a stand tall enough to clear the snow that piles against a wall, rated anchors, and a spot away from roof valleys and eaves that dump snow and ice. A buried outdoor unit can't defrost properly and loses heating capacity.

Boulder County's heating design temperature is 0°F, so we choose cold-climate models with published output in single digits.

Permits, code and electrical

Lafayette's quick contractor permits cover straight AC and furnace replacements; a new mini-split is a new system, so expect a regular mechanical permit through the GovBuilt portal. The city adopted the Metro Cohort Model Code, based on the 2024 IECC, and the 2026 NEC effective August 1, 2026. We pull the permit, and any subcontractor we use holds a City license.

Each outdoor unit gets a dedicated 240-volt circuit and a disconnect. Indoor condensate goes to an interior drain or pump so it can't freeze outdoors.

Incentives, including Switch Together

Lafayette is a partner city in Boulder County's Switch Together heat pump group-buy, and the county set a November 8 deadline for 2026 offers, so act quickly if you want in this year. Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate applies to cold-climate systems in existing homes when we submit before work starts. Colorado's $1,000 credit for 2026 includes at least $333 off your invoice. Xcel changed its heat pump rebates on October 1, 2026; confirm current amounts with Xcel. The federal 25C credit has ended.

Sizing the heads to the rooms

A common mistake is installing one big head in an open room and hoping it reaches the bedrooms. Cold air and warm air both need a path, and closed doors block them. We size each head from the room's heat loss and heat gain and add a head wherever a door will usually be shut.

For a single room over the garage, a small single-zone unit is ideal. For a whole Old Town house, a multi-zone outdoor unit with two or three heads keeps the yard free of extra condensers.

Ductless Mini-Split Installation FAQs — Lafayette

Does a mini-split help with wildfire smoke?

Only a little. Head filters catch large particles; for smoke, a portable HEPA purifier in the bedroom does more.

Will the quick permit cover a new mini-split?

Probably not. Quick permits are for replacements; a new system usually needs a regular mechanical permit, which we pull.

How high should the outdoor unit sit in Lafayette?

High enough to clear typical snow against the wall, and away from roof drip lines. We use a rated stand or bracket.

Can I still join Switch Together?

Boulder County set a November 8 deadline for 2026 offers. Check with the county right away.

Can a mini-split heat an Old Town house by itself?

Often yes, if sized to the 0°F design temperature and the house has reasonable insulation.
