Heat Pump Installation in Lafayette
Lafayette has more local heat pump support than most Front Range cities. It's a partner in Boulder County's Switch Together group-buy, it's a DRCOG member, and Xcel supplies both gas and electricity. The city also moved to a new energy code on August 1, 2026. Here's how those pieces fit together for an installation.
Boulder County programs
Switch Together is a group-buying program that Boulder County runs with Lafayette and other local cities, Solar United Neighbors and iChoosr. Installers bid in a reverse auction, and the county estimates savings of about 20% off market price, or about $4,500 on an average 3-ton system. Offers in the 2026 round had a November 8 acceptance deadline, so watch for future rounds if you missed it. Boulder County's EnergySmart rebates have been income-qualified only (at or below 100% of area median income) since January 2026, and they can stack with other programs.
Whether you buy through a group program or get your own bids, ask for the same things: a room-by-room load calculation, the AHRI-matched equipment, its output at 5°F and the backup-heat plan.

Lafayette Climate Note
Lafayette sits at about 5,266 ft with the foothills visible to the west. Cooler nights year-round; lots of homes use heat pumps and dual-fuel systems for efficiency.
Neighborhoods We Serve
Old Town Lafayette, Indian Peaks, Centaur Village, Anna Marie's Park, Coal Creek, Beacon Hill, Brookfield
Size for 0°F, not Denver's numbers
Boulder County's ENERGY STAR design temperature is 0°F, a few degrees colder than Denver's. Lafayette's January mean low is about 18°F and the city gets about 65 inches of snow a year, so we size to the colder number and plan for snow. NREL measured about 5–7% less heat pump capacity at Golden's elevation than at sea level, and we correct for that too. Outdoor units go on raised stands, out of drift zones and roof drip lines. The city's 145 mph design wind speed is a reminder to anchor them properly. Our winter guide covers defrost and backup heat.
Old Town cottages and newer neighborhoods
Lafayette was a coal-mining town, platted in 1888, and Old Town still has small miners' cottages and early houses. Many have limited ductwork and older electrical service. Ductless mini-splits, or a heat pump paired with the existing furnace, usually avoid major renovation. Our mini-split guide covers the options. Neighborhoods built during the growth from 1980 to 2000, such as Indian Peaks, and the homes around Waneka Lake typically have central ducts that a cold-climate ducted heat pump can reuse after an airflow check.
Permits under the new code
The City of Lafayette adopted the 2024 I-codes, a Metro Cohort Model Code based on the 2024 IECC and the 2026 NEC, effective August 1, 2026. Permits go through the GovBuilt portal. Contractor-only quick permits cover straightforward AC and furnace replacements, but a heat pump with new electrical work may need more review. Subcontractors must hold a City license. We file the permit and schedule inspections. Because the 2026 NEC now applies, the electrical side of a heat pump job, including the disconnect and circuit for the outdoor unit, is inspected under that edition.
Rebates and running costs
Xcel's heat pump rebates apply here. Installers report Xcel lowered them on October 1, 2026, so confirm amounts with Xcel. Power Ahead Colorado pays $1,500 for a cold-climate air-source heat pump in an existing home when a verified contractor gets pre-approval first. The Colorado credit is $1,000 in 2026, with at least $333 passed to you. The federal 25C credit has ended. At current prices, a 95% gas furnace usually costs less per unit of heat than a heat pump, so homes that keep gas often do best with dual fuel. Going fully electric also drops the monthly gas service charge.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Lafayette
Can I still join Switch Together?
The 2026 round required offers to be accepted by November 8. Check with Boulder County about future rounds.
Does Lafayette's new energy code affect a heat pump install?
It sets the code the installation is permitted and inspected under, including electrical work under the 2026 NEC. We handle the permit through GovBuilt.
What design temperature should a Lafayette heat pump be sized for?
0°F, Boulder County's ENERGY STAR value, with an altitude correction and a backup-heat plan.
Is a ducted heat pump possible in an Old Town cottage?
Sometimes, if there's a basement or crawlspace for ducts. Many owners choose ductless heads instead because they avoid opening walls and ceilings.
Who qualifies for EnergySmart rebates?
Since January 2026, households at or below 100% of area median income. Xcel rebates, Power Ahead and the state credit have no income limit.
