Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Superior
Superior stayed a coal town of about 250 people until the 1990s, so nearly every home here is either a Rock Creek Ranch or Sagamore-era house or a rebuild after the Marshall Fire. That makes ductless mini-splits less about historic retrofits and more about high-performance homes and problem rooms. Wind is the other big factor.
High-performance rebuilds
The Marshall Fire destroyed 393 homes in Superior, including all of Sagamore and most of Original Town. Boulder County reported that roughly 70% of nearly 200 rebuild permits were designed to the 2021 IECC or better. Homes built that tight have small heating and cooling loads, sometimes small enough that a well-planned multi-zone mini-split can carry the whole house.
In those cases a ducted system can be oversized and short-cycle. Ductless heads, or a mix of wall heads and a small ducted air handler for the bedrooms, match output to the low loads more closely.

Superior Climate Note
Superior at about 5,522 ft sits between Boulder and the Denver suburbs. Heat pumps and dual-fuel systems work exceptionally well; advanced air filtration is essential post-Marshall Fire.

Rock Creek Ranch bonus rooms and basements
Rock Creek Ranch homes date mostly from the 1990s and early 2000s. Like many production houses of that era, they often have a bonus room above the garage that the main system barely reaches, and basements that were finished long after the HVAC was designed. One head per problem room is usually the fix, and it leaves the existing furnace and AC alone.
Wall heads, cassettes or a small ducted unit
Owners of new, carefully designed rebuilds often don't want a white box on every bedroom wall. Ceiling cassettes sit flush in the drywall, and a slim ducted air handler hidden in a closet or attic can feed two or three bedrooms through short runs. Both connect to the same multi-zone outdoor unit as the wall heads in the main rooms.
The trade-off is cost and access: cassettes need ceiling framing planned in advance, and ducted units need a filter you can actually reach. We sort that out at the design stage, ideally before drywall.
Original Town
The few surviving Original Town houses and the new homes built there sit on small lots near the street. We place condensers on side or rear walls, keep line sets in painted covers and route condensate inside where possible. See our mini-split guide for older homes for how this works in smaller houses.
Mounting for 154 mph design wind
The Town of Superior's construction requirements use a 154 mph design wind speed, among the highest in the metro. For outdoor units that means rated stands or wall brackets, proper anchors, and placement that keeps the unit out of wind tunnels between houses where possible. We also raise the condenser above snow drifts so it can shed defrost water and keep heating.
Cold-climate sizing and wiring
Boulder County's heating design temperature is 0°F, and Superior sits at about 5,522 feet. We size each head from a room-by-room load and choose models with published capacity at 5°F and below. Each outdoor unit needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and a disconnect within sight. Many rebuilds were wired with spare capacity, but we confirm before quoting.
Code, permits and money
The Town of Superior Building Department enforces the 2018 IRC and IMC and the 2021 IECC with local amendments. Permit filing and the inspection appointment are on us.
Superior is in DRCOG, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate can apply to existing homes; houses still under construction are excluded. Colorado's 2026 credit is $1,000 for qualifying air-source heat pumps, with at least $333 discounted on the invoice. Superior is also a partner in Boulder County's Switch Together group-buy, with 2026 offers due November 8. Xcel's heat pump rebates changed October 1, 2026; confirm with Xcel. The federal 25C credit has ended.

Ductless Mini-Split Installation FAQs — Superior
Can a mini-split heat my whole rebuilt home?
Sometimes. Rebuilds designed to the 2021 IECC have low loads, and a multi-zone system sized room by room may handle them.
How do you mount a unit for Superior's wind?
On rated stands or wall brackets with proper anchors, placed out of drift zones and wind tunnels where possible.
Is my Rock Creek Ranch bonus room a good candidate?
Yes. A single head sized for that room usually fixes the temperature swing without touching the main system.
Does Power Ahead apply to rebuilds?
Only once the home is complete. Homes under construction are excluded.
Which code applies?
Superior uses the 2018 IRC and IMC and the 2021 IECC with town amendments.
Can the indoor units be hidden?
Partly. Ceiling cassettes and small ducted air handlers are less visible than wall heads, though they cost more.
