Heat Pump Installation in Superior
Superior has two very different kinds of homes now. The Marshall Fire destroyed 393 homes here in December 2021, including all of Sagamore and most of Original Town, and those have been rebuilt to newer energy standards. Rock Creek Ranch and other 1990s neighborhoods still have their original-era systems. Heat pump installation looks different in each.
Rebuilt homes
Boulder County reported that about 70% of nearly 200 rebuild permits in Superior were designed to the 2021 IECC or higher. Tight envelopes and new ducts make these homes good candidates to run on a cold-climate heat pump alone, often without much backup heat. If your rebuild came with a gas furnace and AC, adding a heat pump when the AC needs replacing is simple, because the ducts and electrical service are already modern.
One rule to know: Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate covers retrofits in existing buildings, not new construction. A home still being built doesn't qualify. A finished, occupied rebuild that later replaces equipment is a different case; ask about eligibility at that point.

Superior Climate Note
Superior at about 5,522 ft sits between Boulder and the Denver suburbs. Heat pumps and dual-fuel systems work exceptionally well; advanced air filtration is essential post-Marshall Fire.

Rock Creek Ranch and 1990s homes
Rock Creek Ranch and similar neighborhoods drove Superior's growth to about 9,000 residents by 2000. Those homes now have furnaces and ACs at or past typical service life. Most have central ducts and 200-amp service, so a ducted cold-climate heat pump paired with a new or existing furnace is the usual design. Two-story layouts benefit from a variable-speed system and a check of upstairs returns. We size each home with a Manual J rather than matching the old equipment. Many owners have replaced windows or added attic insulation since the 1990s, and those upgrades often mean a smaller, less expensive heat pump will do the job.
Wind and snow call for solid mounting
The town's design wind speed is 154 mph, among the highest in the metro, and the fire itself was driven by extreme downslope winds. We anchor outdoor units to pads or brackets rated for the load and keep them out of spots where snow drifts or slides off roofs. Boulder County's design temperature is 0°F, and we size to it, correcting for altitude. NREL's tests in Golden found about 5–7% less capacity than at sea level. Our sizing guide has the details.
Permits
The Town of Superior Building Department issues the permit under the town's adopted codes and amendments. We include the load calculation and equipment documentation, coordinate the electrical work, and schedule the inspection.
Programs, rebates and costs
Xcel Energy is the listed gas and electric provider here. Installers report Xcel's heat pump rebates changed on October 1, 2026; confirm current amounts with Xcel. The town is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead's $1,500 applies to existing homes with contractor pre-approval before work begins. The Colorado tax credit is $1,000 in 2026, with at least $333 discounted on the invoice. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025.
The town is also a partner in Boulder County's Switch Together group-buy, which the county says saves about 20% off market price. The 2026 round required offers to be accepted by November 8. Boulder County EnergySmart rebates are limited to households at or below 100% of area median income. On operating cost, gas from a high-efficiency furnace is usually cheaper per unit of heat at current prices, but a very tight rebuilt home needs so little heat that the difference is small, and going all-electric drops the fixed gas charge. Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Superior
Can my Marshall Fire rebuild run on a heat pump alone?
Often, yes. Homes built to the 2021 IECC or better have low heating loads, so a cold-climate unit sized for 0°F with modest backup can usually carry them.
Is a rebuild eligible for Power Ahead?
Not while it's under construction. The rebate covers retrofits in existing buildings only.
How do you handle Superior's wind?
We anchor outdoor units to pads or brackets rated for the load and keep them clear of drifting and sliding snow.
Is Superior part of Switch Together?
Yes, Superior is a partner. The 2026 round's offers were due November 8.
What should I replace first in a 1990s Rock Creek Ranch home?
Usually the AC. Swapping it for a heat pump and keeping a working furnace as backup is the lowest-cost step, and you can go all-electric later when the furnace wears out.
