Furnace Installation & Replacement in Mead
Mead was a village of a few hundred people as recently as 1990, which makes its housing some of the youngest in the region. The furnaces in Liberty Ranch and The Highlands have years left, while homes from the 2000s and the original town are where replacements are happening now. Here's how we plan a new furnace in Mead.
Where Mead homes are in the furnace cycle
The original town, platted in 1906, has older houses with smaller basements and, in some cases, furnaces on old chimneys. Homes from Mead's first growth in the 2000s, when the population went from about 2,000 to 3,400, are now reaching the 15- to 25-year range where builder-grade furnaces start failing. Liberty Ranch, built in the 2010s, and The Highlands, built around 2020, are mostly a decade or more from replacement.
If you're in one of the newer subdivisions and a furnace fails early, it's often worth checking whether the manufacturer's parts warranty still applies before replacing anything.
For homes in the replacement window, the decision usually comes down to whether to replace the AC at the same time. Furnaces and coils from the same builder install were matched to each other, and a new furnace often needs a matching coil or a transition piece to fit. Replacing both lets the system be set up and tested as a unit, and it's also when a heat pump is easiest to add.

Sizing new and old homes
At 5,017 feet, a gas furnace delivers about 80% of its sea-level input after high-altitude conversion with the correct orifices and gas pressure. We size from a Manual J. Older homes in town often have more furnace than they need after window and insulation upgrades. Newer two-story homes tend to have the right total capacity but weak airflow upstairs, which zoning, a two-stage furnace or a larger return can fix. Open country around Mead also means more wind exposure than in an inner suburb.
NOx-compliant furnaces and venting
Since January 1, 2026, Colorado has required new gas furnaces to meet 14 ng/J NOx or the current ENERGY STAR version. If your home has a condensing furnace on PVC, a 97% replacement typically reuses the vent path after we check pipe size and length. An older house with an 80% furnace on a chimney or metal vent can stay with an ultra-low NOx 80% model, or switch to condensing with a new PVC vent and drain. Our NOx guide covers the rule.
Permits for the furnace and the gas line
In Mead, the Building Division permits furnace, water heater and AC replacements as well as appliance gas piping. If a replacement involves moving the furnace or running a new gas line, that work is covered in the permit. We file it and schedule the inspection.
Two possible gas utilities and heat pump options
Mead's resource directory names two gas companies, Xcel Energy and Black Hills Energy, and both United Power and Xcel for electricity, depending on location. Check your bill. If Xcel supplies your electricity, a heat pump may qualify for Xcel rebates; confirm current amounts, which changed in October 2026. With United Power, those don't apply, but Colorado's $1,000 air-source credit and Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 cold-climate rebate do.
If your AC is aging too, compare a heat pump with a new furnace in our heat pump vs. furnace guide.

Furnace Installation FAQs — Mead
Does Mead require a permit for a furnace replacement?
Yes, and also for gas lines to appliances. We file it with the Town of Mead Building Division.
Who supplies gas to my Mead home?
Xcel Energy or Black Hills Energy, depending on location. Check your bill.
My Liberty Ranch furnace failed early. Should I replace it?
Check whether the manufacturer parts warranty still applies first. A repair may be the better move.
Do I need a bigger furnace for altitude?
You need one converted for about 5,000 feet and sized by a Manual J, not a bigger one by default.
