Heat Pump Installation in Mead
Mead had just 456 residents in 1990 and nearly 4,800 in 2020, so most homes are recent, in subdivisions like Liberty Ranch and The Highlands. Those houses suit heat pumps well. The catch is utilities: depending on the street, you might buy gas from Xcel or Black Hills and electricity from United Power or Xcel, and that combination decides your rebates.
Find your utility combination first
The town's community resource directory lists both Xcel Energy and Black Hills Energy for gas, and both United Power and Xcel for electricity. Check your bills before collecting quotes.
If Xcel supplies your electricity, Xcel's heat pump rebates apply; installers report they changed on October 1, 2026, so confirm current amounts with Xcel. If Xcel supplies only your gas, installers say Xcel gas customers, including gas-only customers, can also qualify; confirm that with Xcel too. Black Hills Energy's 2026 Colorado gas rebates have no electric heat pump measure, but list $350 to $375 for a 95% or 97% AFUE furnace if a dual-fuel project includes one. United Power runs its own member program; we couldn't confirm its 2026 heat pump amounts.

Incentives everyone in town can use
Mead is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate applies to cold-climate air-source heat pumps in existing homes. A verified contractor must submit for pre-approval before work starts, and homes still under construction don't qualify. The Colorado heat pump tax credit is $1,000 in 2026, with at least $333 passed to you as an invoice discount. The federal 25C credit expired at the end of 2025. Power Ahead says its rebate can be combined with utility and local government rebates, so a Mead home on Xcel service may be able to stack all three.
Newer subdivisions make installs simpler
Homes in Liberty Ranch, built in the 2010s, and The Highlands, around 2020, generally have ducts designed for central air, a condenser pad and enough electrical capacity for a heat pump circuit. Their original ACs are still fairly young. When one fails, replacing it with a cold-climate heat pump and adding dual-fuel controls to the existing furnace costs modestly more than a straight AC replacement. Newer, tighter homes often have low enough heating loads that the heat pump carries most of the winter. Older homes in the original town, platted in 1906, may need a closer look at ducts and wiring before we recommend a ducted system.
Sizing for Weld County winters
Weld County's ENERGY STAR design temperature is 0°F, colder than the 3–5°F used for most of the Denver metro. Mead sits at about 5,017 feet on open ground between the Front Range and the plains, where wind and drifting snow are part of winter. We run a Manual J at 0°F, choose equipment by its low-temperature output with an altitude correction (NREL measured about 5–7% less capacity at Golden's elevation than at sea level), and mount outdoor units on raised, anchored stands. Our sizing guide explains the approach.
Permits and running costs
The Town of Mead Building Division (970-535-4477) requires permits for adding or replacing a furnace or air conditioner and for gas lines to appliances. A heat pump installation falls under the same rules, and we file the permit and schedule the inspection.
On operating cost, gas from a 95% furnace is usually cheaper per unit of heat at current Colorado prices. Your break-even point depends on which electric utility you have and its rate plan. Use your own rates in our dual-fuel guide to set the switchover temperature.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Mead
Which utility serves my Mead home?
It varies. Gas may come from Xcel or Black Hills, and electricity from United Power or Xcel. Your bills tell you, and they decide which utility rebates apply.
Is Power Ahead available in Mead?
Yes. The town is a DRCOG member. Existing homes qualify for $1,500 with contractor pre-approval before work begins.
Is my Liberty Ranch home ready for a heat pump?
Usually. Most homes from the 2010s have ducts and electrical service that can support one. We confirm with a load calculation and panel check.
Do I need a permit?
Yes. The town requires permits for furnace and AC installation or replacement. We handle it.
Do I need backup heat with a heat pump?
For the coldest nights, yes. Most homes here keep the gas furnace for that. All-electric setups use backup strips sized from the load calculation.
