Heat Pump Installation in Lyons

Lyons runs its own electric utility, so your power doesn't come from Xcel, and the heat pump math works from the town's rate instead. Add sandstone buildings downtown, propane on outlying parcels and a town still shaped by the 2013 flood, and installation here takes some local knowledge.

Running costs on Lyons electricity

The town buys its power from the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska and lists a flat usage rate of $0.1339 per kWh in 2026, the same at all times of day, plus a $12 monthly base charge. Using EIA's recent Colorado average gas price of about $1.05 per therm, that rate means a heat pump needs a coefficient of performance (COP) of about 3.5 to match a 95% gas furnace on cost, or about 3.0 to match an older 80% furnace. That's our calculation; your gas price may differ. Cold-climate units reach those levels in mild weather but fall below them on cold nights, which is why dual fuel is common where gas is available. Our dual-fuel guide shows the method.

Propane is a different story. Propane generally costs more per unit of heat than piped gas, so on properties outside town that heat with propane, a heat pump can carry a much larger share of the season economically.

Lyons Climate Note

At about 5,341 feet at the mouth of the foothills, Lyons gets cold canyon-edge winter nights and warm summer days, and many areas of town lie in the mapped floodplain.

Floodplain and placement

Much of Lyons was hit by the September 2013 flood, and work in the floodplain needs a separate floodplain development permit. We mount outdoor units on raised stands or wall brackets, keep electrical disconnects high and route line sets so they won't be the first thing water reaches. Outside the floodplain, the same raised mounts keep units above snow and let defrost meltwater drain.

Historic sandstone and newer homes

Buildings in the downtown sandstone historic district, built from the early 1870s to 1917, have thick masonry walls and seldom have room for ducts. Ductless mini-splits fit best, with line sets kept off street-facing walls where possible. Homes from the 1990s in Steamboat Valley usually have central ducts and can take a ducted cold-climate heat pump. Boulder County's design temperature is 0°F, and we size to it with an altitude correction; NREL found about 5–7% less capacity in Golden than at sea level.

Permits and licensing

The town contracts SAFEbuilt for all building department services, through the Community Core portal. A Town of Lyons contractor license is required to pull a permit, and the 2024 ICC codes took effect July 1, 2026. We handle the permit, the floodplain permit when needed and the inspection.

Rebates and programs

Because the town supplies electricity, Xcel's electric heat pump rebates don't apply to town power customers. The town's electric utility page points customers to MEAN's energy efficiency programs, and MEAN lists a High Efficiency Heat Pump Program for its 2026–27 fiscal year, first-come and while funds last. We couldn't confirm whether it covers the town or the amount, so ask the town's utility. Lyons is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 applies to existing homes with contractor pre-approval. Colorado's credit adds $1,000 in 2026, at least a third of it as an invoice discount, and federal 25C has ended. Lyons is also a partner in Boulder County's Switch Together group-buy; the 2026 round's offers were due November 8. Boulder County EnergySmart rebates are income-qualified only.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Lyons

Do Xcel heat pump rebates apply here?

Not for electricity, because the town runs its own electric utility. Ask the town about MEAN's heat pump program, and use Power Ahead and the state credit.

Does a heat pump save money on town electricity?

Against propane or electric baseboard, usually yes. Against a 95% gas furnace, it needs a COP of about 3.5 to break even at the town's rate, so dual fuel is often the economical setup.

My home is in the floodplain. Can I still install a heat pump?

Yes, with a floodplain development permit and an outdoor unit mounted above the expected flood elevation.

Do I need a town contractor license?

Your contractor does. The town requires its own contractor license to pull a permit.
