Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Mead

The town had 456 residents in 1990 and nearly 4,800 by 2020, so most homes are newer and ducted. A ductless mini-split here usually serves a basement, a bonus room or an old house in the original town. Mead's split utilities, with Xcel, Black Hills and United Power all serving parts of town, affect which rebates apply.

Mead Climate Note

Neighborhoods We Serve

Liberty Ranch, The Highlands, original Mead townsite

Liberty Ranch and The Highlands

Liberty Ranch homes date mostly from the 2010s and The Highlands from around 2020. Their ducted systems are relatively new, so ductless additions here usually target a finished basement or a bonus room. Many owners finish basements a few years after moving in; adding a single-zone head as part of the finish avoids stretching the original duct system.

Check your HOA's guidelines on outdoor equipment visible from the street.

Choosing equipment for a newer home

Most Mead projects are single-zone: one head for one room. We size it from that room's heat loss and gain, and we choose a model with low sound levels for bedrooms and offices. For a basement, a small head is usually enough, since the ground moderates temperatures; oversizing would leave the room clammy in summer.

If you're finishing a basement with several rooms, a multi-zone unit with a head in the family room and one in a bedroom gives each its own control. A ducted mini-split air handler is another option when you'd rather not see wall heads.

The original town

The town was platted in 1906, and the older houses in the original town may lack central air or have ducts that skip additions. A few heads can cover those spaces without opening walls. For room-by-room layout ideas, read the older-home mini-split guide.

Cold-climate sizing

Weld County's heating design temperature is 0°F. We size each head from a room-by-room load and choose models with published output in single digits. Outdoor units go on stands above drifts and away from roof drip lines. Indoor condensate runs to an interior drain or pump.

What install day involves

A single-zone install usually takes one day. We mount the head, drill one penetration, set the outdoor unit, flare the copper, pressure-test with nitrogen and pull a deep vacuum before releasing refrigerant. We then set the system up for heating on cold mornings and show you how to clean the filter.

Permits and wiring

The town's Building Division requires permits for adding or replacing furnaces, water heaters and air conditioners, and for gas lines. We pull the permit for a mini-split and schedule the inspection. Each outdoor unit needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and an outdoor disconnect.

State and regional incentives

Mead is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate can apply to cold-climate heat pumps in existing homes when we submit before work starts; new construction is excluded. You also get Colorado's $1,000 credit on qualifying equipment this year, with a minimum of $333 deducted from your invoice. The federal 25C credit has ended.
