AC Installation & Replacement in Lakewood
Lakewood's median home was built around 1977, but the city stretches from 1940s brick ranches near the Denver Federal Center to Green Mountain homes started in 1964 and newer construction in Solterra. Each era brings a different cooling project. We install central air and heat pumps across Lakewood with a Manual J, a City of Lakewood mechanical permit, and a written estimate before work starts.
Adding central air to Eiber's brick ranches
Eiber and the neighborhoods around it are full of 1940s and 1950s brick ranches that were built with a small furnace and no cooling. Furnaces in these homes often sit in a tight utility closet or a crawlspace-height basement, which limits how tall a new coil can be and how the ducts connect. We measure the space before choosing equipment, since a coil that does not fit can force a whole new furnace.
Ductwork in these houses was sized for heat, and many have a single return. Cooling needs more air, so most installs include added return air. The electrical panel is the other early check: a condenser needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and a disconnect, and older panels may need upgrading first. When ducts cannot reach the bedrooms well, a ductless heat pump is a strong alternative.

Lakewood Climate Note
Foothill location means stronger wind exposure (drains indoor humidity) and temperature swings up to 40°F in a single day. Dual-fuel heat pumps work especially well here.

Green Mountain and 1970s-1990s replacements
Nearly half of Lakewood's homes were built from 1970 to 1999. Most already have central air on a second or third condenser, and the replacement now is a refrigerant change: new split systems use R-454B or R-32, so the indoor coil is replaced with the outdoor unit as a matched pair. A May 2026 EPA rule lets leftover R-410A equipment built before 2025 be installed until stock runs out, but supply is thin.
Green Mountain's homes sit on the slope of a 2,400-acre park, and many get strong afternoon sun on west-facing glass. That shows up in the Manual J. At about 5,650 feet, capacity is also slightly reduced; ACCA-based guidance reported by ACHR News trims dry-coil capacity to roughly 92 percent at 5,000 feet.
Placement: cottonwoods, hail, and Solterra's HOA
Mature cottonwoods shed fluff that mats condenser coils in early summer, and Lakewood takes its share of hail. We place condensers with open airflow, away from roof valleys and downspouts, and not tight against fences or shrubs. A hail guard can be worth it in exposed yards.
In Solterra and other HOA communities, moving the condenser or adding a unit can need design approval, so check before installation is scheduled. Solterra's homes are newer, so most owners there are not replacing yet, but some add a ductless unit for a bonus room or finished basement, which also needs a careful location.
Swamp coolers, heat pumps, and incentives
The city's mechanical permit covers central AC and evaporative coolers alike, and many older homes still use a swamp cooler. Converting to central air means sealing the cooler opening and adding a proper return path.
Xcel Energy supplies both gas and electricity here, and heat pumps have qualified for Xcel rebates that standard AC has not; amounts changed October 1, 2026, so confirm them. Colorado's 2026 air-source credit is $1,000, claimed by the contractor with at least $333 discounted to you, and Power Ahead Colorado pays $1,500 for cold-climate heat pumps filed before work starts. See our heat pump vs. furnace guide.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Lakewood
What permit does Lakewood require for a new AC?
A mechanical permit from the City of Lakewood Planning and Public Works, which covers central AC and evaporative coolers. We pull it and schedule the inspection.
My furnace is in a small closet. Can I still add central air?
Usually, but coil height and clearances matter. We measure before quoting, and sometimes a new furnace and coil together are the better fit.
What efficiency is required?
DOE's North region minimum is 13.4 SEER2 for a split AC and 14.3 SEER2 for a split heat pump.
Can I convert my swamp cooler to central air?
Yes. We seal the cooler opening, add return air, and confirm your panel can support the new circuit.
Are there rebates for standard AC?
Xcel has not listed a rebate for standard central AC. Heat pumps qualify for state, regional, and Xcel incentives.
